Neneh Cherry
Neneh Cherry (* 10. March 1964 in Stockholm as Neneh Marianne Karlsson ) is a Swedish hip-hop -Künstlerin, jazz - singer and songwriter . She is the stepdaughter of Don Cherry . Her biggest commercial hits include Buffalo Stance (1988), Manchild (1989), I've Got You Under My Skin (1990), 7 Seconds (1994, with Youssou N'Dour ) and Woman (1996).
Her hip-hop is repeatedly influenced by other styles, for example soul ( Inna City Mamma , 1989), rock ( Trout , 1992, with Michael Stipe from REM ) or world music (7 Seconds) .
life and career
Neneh Cherry grew up with her four years younger half-brother Eagle-Eye Cherry with her mother, the Swedish painter Monika Karlsson (also Moki Cherry), and her stepfather, the jazz musician Don Cherry . The contact with her father, the musician Amahdu Jah from Sierra Leone , never completely broke off. On her father's side she has a half-sister, the singer Titiyo . She spent the first two years of her life in Hässleholm in Sweden. Then the whole family traveled with Don, who was mostly on tour, around the world - mostly through the USA and Europe . One of the few places where the family stayed regularly was New York , where Neneh also went to school sporadically. Through her stepfather, who himself had been one of the most important innovators of jazz, especially free jazz , since the 1960s , she got to know a number of musicians at an early age. Among them were celebrities like Ornette Coleman , with whom Don Cherry worked closely, and Miles Davis .
In the early 1980s she dropped out of school, moved to London and began her own musical career. The first group she performed with was the punk rock band The Cherries. Before she started her solo career with Stop the War , a protest song against the Falklands War (1982), she worked with The Slits and Rip Rig + Panic . In 1986 she recorded the track Slow Train to Dawn with The The .
With her husband Cameron McVey (also producer of Massive Attacks debut album Blue Lines , Portishead's Dummy and later albums by All Saints and Sugababes ), she recorded her debut album Raw Like Sushi in 1988 . The single Buffalo Stance became their first big hit. Shortly afterwards she fell ill with Lyme disease , which temporarily hindered her work as a musician.
In 1990 she had her second great success with I've Got You Under My Skin , her contribution to the AIDS benefit compilation Red Hot + Blue .
In 1992 she released her second album, Homebrew , on which Michael Stipe ( REM ) and Guru ( Gang Starr ) can also be heard. The following year she moved to New York for a short time, in 1995 she rented a house near Málaga ( Spain ), where she lived with her family until 1999.
Her third album Man was released in 1996. The album was also created under the impression of her third pregnancy and the death of her stepfather Don Cherry, who had spent the last eight months of his life in her home in Spain. She called it "an album of life and death" . The music on it was more oriented towards rock and soul , elements from drum and bass and hip-hop faded into the background. With the song 7 Seconds , a duet with Youssou N'Dour , which was released for the first time in 1994, you can find their biggest hit on Man . The song reached the top of the charts in four countries. The album was received ambiguously by German music critics. It is "an over-produced downbeat album in which Cherry's hip-hop skills disappeared under a layer of excessive piano and string sounds," said z. B. Christian Werthschulte. Frank Sawatzki thought it was a "tired radio production".
In 2010 she worked for the first time with the free jazz band The Thing ( Mats Gustafsson , Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love ), with whom she released the album The Cherry Thing in 2012 and also gave concerts.
In February 2014, Cherry's first solo album in 18 years was released with Blank Project . The London musician Kieran Hebden, alias Four Tet, is responsible for the production, and the young British duo RocketNumberNine, consisting of the brothers Ben and Tom Page, is responsible for the music. On keyboards and drums, the two deliver a spartan sound in which electronic music, hip-hop, pop and, in some cases, rock flow into one another.
On August 1, 2018, Cherry released a new single called Kong . The song was produced by Four Tet and Robert "3D" Del Naja , one of the founding members of the British trip-hop band Massive Attack . The radio station ByteFM called Kong "hypnotic night music in downtempo".
Neneh Cherry is the mother of three daughters, Naima, Tyson and Mabel . She is married to the British music producer Cameron McVey, the father of Marlon Roudette (founder of the former music duo Mattafix and successful solo artist), whose stepmother she is. The family now lives partly in London and partly in Sweden.
