Four Tet is the name used by Kieran Hebden (* 1977 in Putney , London ) for his solo project with electronic music to distinguish it from his work with the post-rock band Fridge . Earlier publications were also made under the pseudonyms 4t recordings and Joshua Falken .

General

Four Tet is highly respected in many parts of Europe (and most of all in Hebden's native Britain ) for his work as a talented experimental artist, but he is virtually unknown in the United States . Hebden's solo work mostly consists of samples obtained from various sources, such as hip-hop , electronic music , techno , jazz , and folk . He then mixes some of these with drum samples he recorded himself and simple guitar harmonies.

The music

Four Tet's music bears a certain resemblance to other musicians like Prefuse 73 , who also use computers for processing and thus achieve certain staccato effects, but Hebden's work is characterized by organic and harmonic melodies.

Hebden released his first material as Four Tet on a 36-minute single called Thirtysixtwentyfive . Later that year he released the very jazz influenced single Misnomer . The first album was Dialogue (1999); it combined hip-hop with dissonant jazz samples.

The years from 2001

In 2001 the second album Pause was released, which contained more folk and electronica elements, which led some critics to call Hebden's style Folktronica . The piece Everything is Alright was of Nike used in 2001/2002 in a commercial.

Rounds was released in May 2003 and is Hebden's most ambitious and profitable album by then. It contains samples of a mandolin (Spirit Fingers) and a rubber duck (Slow Jam) . Three singles were released from the Rounds album : She Moves She , As Serious As Your Life and My Angel Rocks Back and Forth . The last of the three was released as an EP and contains remixes by Icarus and Isambard Khroustalov as well as additional unreleased material such as I've Got Viking in Me and All the Chimes .

Hebden's musical zeal is evident not only in his own publications, but above all in countless remixes by musicians of various genres, such as: The Cinematic Orchestra , Madvillain , The Notwist , Lars Hornveth , James Yorkston , Aphex Twin , Beth Orton , Radiohead , Boom Bip , David Holmes , Bloc Party , The xx . As a producer and studio musician, Keiran Hebden appeared for the London musician Dempsey on his debut album Sunrise / Sunset (with Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers from Fridge ).

In early 2003, Four Tet was the support act for Radiohead on their European tour. A sampler put together for the Late Night Tales 2004 series of the London Azuli label is evidence of Hebden's musical influences and his preference for unusual DJ sets.

In early 2005 Keiran Hebden performed with jazz-rock drummer Steve Reid in Paris and London, which resulted in an intensive collaboration: Steve Reid's album Spirit Walk 2005 (with Keiran Hebden on Electronics) and two albums as a duo in 2006.

The album Everything Ecstatic , released in May 2005, breaks with the expectations of the wider audience gained by the albums Pause and Rounds , as the "Folktronica" elements take a back seat and electro-rhythmic experiments are given space.

In June 2006, an edition of Four Tet's DJ Kicks series was published.

At the end of April 2008, Four Tet released the mini EP Ringer . That same year, Four Tet recorded the final tune "Crawl, End Crawl" for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace . According to his own account, he only had about a day to do this, a week later he saw the film at the premiere.

On January 31, 2010 the album There Is Love in You was released , which is characterized by harmonic-rhythmic tracks.

On August 20, 2012, the album Pink was released on Four Tet's in-house label Text Records.

In 2015 the album Bahdeni Nami by Omar Souleyman was released. The title track was produced by Four Tet, who had already taken over the production of the previous album Wenu Wenu .
