The Sugababes are one of London coming British pop - girl group whose original line was formed 1998th

The group was founded by Keisha Buchanan , Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy . After the first album and the top ten hit Overload , Donaghy left the group in 2001 due to disputes with management and band members. With the entry of Heidi Range in 2002, the band had their final commercial breakthrough with their first number one single Freak Like Me .

After Buena also left the group in 2005 and Buchanan in 2009, the band last consisted of Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen , so that no founding member was involved in the project. This line-up split in late 2011, which only became known in summer 2013.

Band history

1998–2001: Foundation and One Touch

First line- up : Donaghy, Buena and Buchanan

In 1998 the friends Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy decided to found a girl band. They got in contact with Cameron McVey, at the time manager of the All Saints , who helped the then fourteen-year-old girl to a record deal with London Records within a few months .

A little later, the trio began recording their debut album. In September 2000, the first single from the album One Touch was released with Overload . The song, which was praised by the critics, developed into a Europe-wide top ten success. It reached 3rd place in Germany and Austria, 5th place in Switzerland and 6th place in the United Kingdom. The third single from the album, Run for Cover , also made it into the international charts. The second single, New Year , which reached number 12, and the fourth and final single, Soul Sound, with a top position at number 30, were only released in the UK.

Because the chart positions of album and singles did not meet the expectations of the record company, they dissolved the contract with the band in autumn 2001. Around the same time, Donaghy decided to leave the band for personal reasons.

2002–2004: Second line- up , Angels with Dirty Faces and Three

Second cast : Buena, Range and Buchanan in Bristol (2004)

At the beginning of 2002, Atomic Kitten founding member Heidi Range from Liverpool replaced Donaghy. As a result, the new line-up signed a contract with Island Records and began recording their new album Angels with Dirty Faces . The first single Freak like Me was released in advance in the spring of 2002. The song was produced by Richard X and is a mash-up song consisting of the instrumental by Are Friends Electric? by Gary Numan and Tubeway Army and the lyrics to the song Freak like Me by Adina Howard . He immediately rose to number 1 on the British singles charts and cemented the success of the new line- up .

With the second number one hit Round Round , the double A single Stronger / Angels with Dirty Faces and the partial cover Shape (originally by Sting ), three and four further international top ten successes were released by the beginning of 2003. The album reached the top 20 of the German, Austrian and Swiss album charts and sold more than 700,000 units in Great Britain alone. This makes it the band's best-selling album to date.

In the fall of the same year, the band released their third studio album, Three . With the first single Hole in the Head produced by Xenomania , the Sugababes landed their third number one success in the United Kingdom and Ireland in October 2003 . In Germany the song reached number 9, as well as number 5 in Austria and number 8 in Switzerland. With the ballad Too Lost in You , composed by Diane Warren and a cover by French singer Patricia Kaas , the band contributed the title song for the British romantic comedy Actually… Love . The title reached in December 2003 both in the United Kingdom, Switzerland , Norway , the Netherlands, but also in Taiwan and in China the top ten.

By mid-2004, In the Middle and Caught in a Moment, two more singles from Three were released . The band decided to take a longer hiatus after that, as Mutya Buena was pregnant. They were seen together for the first time in over a year in July 2005 on the stage of the Edinburgh Live 8 concert. After the birth of their daughter in March 2005, the trio began work on their next album.

2005: Taller in More Ways and second line-up change

Third line- up : Berrabah, Buchanan and Range (2006)

In October 2005, the band's fourth album was released with Taller in More Ways . The first single, Push the Button , written and produced by Dallas Austin , is the Sugababes' most successful single to date. In the United Kingdom , Austria , Ireland and New Zealand , the song reached number 1, while it rose to number 2 in Germany and third in Switzerland.

Another Austin production followed with Ugly , before founding member Buena announced her departure from the band in late December 2005. Her place was taken by Amelle Berrabah , who accompanied Range and Buchanan on tour with Take That in the spring of 2006 . Then it was decided to re-release Taller in More Ways , on which Berrabah can be heard in four songs. The first joint single with Berrabah, the song Red Dress produced by Xenomania , became another top ten success. The fourth single from the album, Follow Me Home , was only released in the UK and reached number 32 on the charts, which is the band's worst single placement to date.

2006: Overloaded: The Singles Collection

For the early 2006 album Hello Waveforms by the British sound artist William Orbit , the Sugababes contributed the vocal part of the title Spiral together with the Ethiopian-American singer Kenna , but still in the old line-up with Buena .

On November 10, 2006, Overloaded: The Singles Collection was the band's first best-of album. This became a minor success and reached number 3 in the UK. The single Easy released from it reached number 8 in the UK. A DVD of the same name was released at the same time as the album, along with the music videos of the 14 singles previously released, karaoke versions as well as live performances and a download remix collection entitled Overloaded: The Remix Collection , a Napster Live Session and the Primal Screams cover Contains rocks .

Together with Girls Aloud , the Sugababes recorded the song Walk This Way , a cover version of the duet by Aerosmith and Run-DMC , for the children's aid organization Comic Relief . The single went straight to number 1 on the UK charts .

2007–2008: Change and Catfights and Spotlights

On October 8, 2007, the fifth album Change was released , the first album in which Berrabah can be heard in all songs. The first single was About You Now . In the run-up, the Sugababes also presented the songs Denial and Change . The Sugababes reached number 1 in the UK with About You Now only through downloads. The single was number 1 in the UK for 4 weeks, outperforming Push the Button (3 weeks). They were at number 1 in the single, album and download charts at the same time and are the only female artists to have made it twice (previously with Push the Button and the album Taller in More Ways ). The follow-up single Change reached 13th place in Great Britain and 32nd place in Germany. The song Denial was used for the Sugababes “Starcollection” at Deichmann . While it reached number 15 in the UK, the song landed at number 11 in Germany, number 14 in Switzerland and number 4 in Austria.

Immediately after the end of the Change tour , the Sugababes went back to the studio as they had the opportunity to work with new producers. The members describe the album as "milder and more mature" with a stronger focus on the voices of the band members. The sixth studio album, called Catfights and Spotlights , was released in the UK in October 2008. The album rose to number 8 there, but could not reach the charts in any other country. Girls and No Can Do were only released as singles in the UK , where they reached number 3 and 23 respectively.

2009–2011: fourth line-up and Sweet 7

Fourth line- up : Range, Berrabah and Ewen

Instead of a tour for the previous album, the band began work on their next album in America in spring 2009. They signed a record deal with Jay-Z's record label Roc Nation . The seventh studio album should emerge from the work with this record label.

At the end of September 2009 it was announced that after disputes in the band the last remaining founding member Keisha Buchanan was replaced by Jade Ewen . Buchanan said on her Twitter account that this step was not voluntary. It was later revealed that this was a management decision against Buchanan's will, as both Range and Berrabah wanted to leave the band. Both said they could no longer work with Buchanan.

The first single from the album Sweet 7 , Get Sexy , was released in Great Britain on August 31, 2009 and rose to number 2. In Germany the single only reached number 41. Get Sexy is the last single on Keisha Buchanan is. The two subsequent singles, About a Girl and Wear My Kiss , were released in the new line-up with Jade Ewen. Both were able to place in the British top ten. The album, in which Ewen re-recorded the vocal parts of Buchanan, reached number 14 on the album charts, the worst ranking of an album since the debut album. The German publication took place on March 26, 2010.

In March 2010, the BBC reported that Buena, as a founding member, had filed a lawsuit against the use of the name "Sugababes". In her opinion, the band would no longer exist without a founding member. She then won limited rights to the name in 2011. Buena may in future use the name to market certain items, such as cardboard and paper products. The band can still call itself Sugababes .

On April 11, 2010, two more albums were released in Great Britain, which only contained B-sides, The Best of the B’s and The Complete B’s .

In July 2011 it was announced that Sugababes had left Island Records and signed a contract for three albums with Sony RCA . The song Freedom was originally supposed to be released at the end of September 2011 as the first single on the new album . However, the release was canceled less than a week before the scheduled date and the band made the song available for fans to download free of charge.

Since 2012: separation, solo projects and reunification of the first line-up

In early 2012, Heidi Range said in an interview that the Sugababes would not split, but that no further releases were planned at the moment. Instead, all three members would take care of their own projects. Range took part in the British television show Dancing on Ice and was seen in the 2014 musical Happy Day , while both Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen were currently working on material for a solo album. After the band's official homepage was shut down in August 2013, Jade Ewen revealed in an interview with Digital Spy on September 5, 2013 that the band had split up at the end of 2011.

On July 20, 2012 it was announced via Siobhan Donaghy's Twitter account and the music website Popjustice that the founding members of the Sugababes had reunited. In the future the band will release music under the name Mutya Keisha Siobhan .

In the summer of 2019, the founding members Buena, Buchanan and Donaghy recorded the track Flowers (Dj spoony feat. Sugababes) . This was released as an album track on Dj Spoony's Garage Classical album in October 2019.
