The Girls of St. Trinian (original title: St. Trinian's ) is a British comedy film from 2007 (German cinema release August 7, 2008). Directed by Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson and written by Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft .

action

The British boarding school for girls in St. Trinian is in financial difficulties. The new student Annabelle Fritton, a niece of the principal Camilla Fritton, meets head girl Kelly and her friends at the school. They play a prank on their rather neat and conservative new classmate by broadcasting videos on the Internet in which she walks around the boarding school naked. Annabelle calls her father and demands that she be taken out of school, which is unsuccessful. So she has to get used to the anarchy school and try to assert herself.

The new education minister Geoffrey Thwaites, who once had a relationship with Camilla Fritton, is planning reforms of the school system. Due to the bad reputation of the school, these should first be introduced in St. Trinian. After a hockey game against her old school, Annabelle is accepted by the other girls and celebrates with the girls at a party.

Kelly learns of the school's financial problems and, together with the other girls and the headmistress, develops a plan to steal a valuable painting, the sale of which would save the school. The girls take part in a television show, which gives them access to London's National Gallery . During the finals of the televised competition, they steal the painting, where they are disturbed by Thwaites and his daughter.

The students pretend to find the painting in the locker room of a London department store, receive a reward for getting it back and St. Trinian wins the School Challenge . In addition, Annabelle's father, who owns an art gallery in London, is sold a copy of the painting made by the director, Miss Fritton. The school will be saved by these measures.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the film includes Lily Allen , Sophie Ellis-Bextor , Remi Nicole , the Sugababes , Girls Aloud , The Four Aces and Gabriella Cilmi .

Reviews

Derek Elley wrote in Variety magazine on December 28, 2007 that the "mildly amusing" film lacked really sharp dialogue as well as real stars. His scenes would be reminiscent of skits . The film should still reach its target audience - the female British tweens.

Stella Papamichael wrote on December 20, 2007 for the BBC that the characters in the original 1954 film would "eat the characters in this film for breakfast" . Only Rupert Everett shows a biting spirit.

“A mixed spectacle that tries on the one hand to capture the black, humorous, bilious joke of the St. Trinian cartoons and to pay tribute to the classic films, but on the other hand also wants to serve today's teenage audience. That works reasonably well in places, which is mainly due to the great cast. "

Awards

Gemma Arterton was nominated for Best Newcomer for the Empire Award in 2008.

backgrounds

The plot is based on a cartoon by the British cartoonist Ronald Searle and on the film The Beauties of St. Trinians from 1954 and its four sequels shot up to 1980. In the scene in which the students are working out their plan to rob the painting, a short animation sequence based on the original St. Trinian cartoons by Ronald Searle can be seen.

The film was shot in London and Oxfordshire . Its production amounted to an estimated 13.5 million US dollars . After its world premiere on December 10, 2007 in London, the film was released in British cinemas on December 21, 2007, grossing around £ 12 million . The German theatrical release followed on August 7, 2008.

continuation

The sequel The Girls of St. Trinian 2 - On Treasure Hunt was released in 2009. The focus of the plot is the search for a pirate's treasure. Participants include Rupert Everett and Colin Firth in this part and David Tennant .
