Gemma Christina Arterton (born February 2, 1986 in Gravesend , Kent ) is a British actress . She gained fame as the Bond girl "Strawberry Fields" in James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (2008) and through her roles in Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (both 2010).

Life

Her father, a welder, and her mother, a cleaning lady, divorced when she was five years old. Arterton grew up with her three years younger sister Hannah Arterton with her mother in a social housing estate in Gravesend in the south of England . Arterton describes her family as "big and dysfunctional " but happy. After attending a grammar school near Gravesend, she was admitted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , where she was the lower-class girl among many Oxbridge graduates. She graduated there in 2007. Her nasal accent, which is typical of Kent, has worn off after a few years; Already at drama school “I was told I should change it, it would hinder me.” In 2010, director Stephen Frears sent her to a voice coach for the film Immer Drama um Tamara .

She made her stage debut in 2007 as Rosalinde in Shakespeare's Lost Love Labor at London's Globe Theater , her film debut in the same year in the television film Capturing Mary and her debut in a feature film also in 2007 in the British comedy The Girls of St. Trinian . Arterton made her breakthrough in 2008 as Bond girl “Strawberry Fields” in James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace at the side of Daniel Craig . For the role she prevailed against 1,500 female competitors. She also played the character Elizabeth Bennet in the TV miniseries If Jane Austen Knew (2008) based on the novel Pride and Prejudice .

In 2009 she appeared in Radio Rock Revolution and the sequel to The Girls of St. Trinian and in the film Without a Trace - The Kidnapping of Alice Creed . In 2010 she took on roles in the films Clash of the Titans alongside Sam Worthington and alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time . She also played Hilde Wangel in Ibsen's play Baumeister Solness in a performance at the Almeida Theater in London, alongside Stephen Dillane . Together with Elizabeth Debicki as Virginia Woolf , Arterton played the role of Vita Sackville-West in the film Vita & Virginia , which tells the story of the two writers. She was the face of an advertising campaign for the "Neutrogena" skin care range.

In 2010 Arterton married the Italian manager Stefano Catelli, 13 years his senior, in Zuheros, Andalusia . The couple divorced in 2015; Arterton had already announced the separation from Catelli in 2013.

In 2016 Arterton was named to the competition jury of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival . In 2018 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
