action

The two criminals Vic and Danny kidnap Alice Creed to extort money from her wealthy father. While Vic occasionally leaves the apartment previously prepared for the kidnapping, Danny watches over the prisoner Alice alone. Alice is able to take a firearm from Danny on the pretext of having to relieve herself. She threatens him and demands that he immediately release her remaining bonds and fires a warning shot into the wall. In fear of death, Danny reveals himself to be Alice's former boyfriend. Danny claims to plan his future together with Alice and to extort money from her father because he does not have a good relationship with his daughter and would not give her any money voluntarily. Alice is furious at first and continues to force Danny to release her. After Danny's hint that Vic would kill them both, she agrees to his plan and lets herself be tied to the bed again while Vic is knocking on the door again.

Vic is skeptical at first and wants to know what happened in the apartment, but can then be convinced by Danny that everything is fine. At the last minute, Danny can hide the empty cartridge case from him and later even has to swallow it.

When Vic is absent again, Alice seduces Danny and chains him to the bed in an inattentive moment. First she calls the police from a mobile phone and asks for a location. Then she wants to leave the apartment, which is locked from the inside. When she returns to the bed to get the apartment key out of her jacket, Danny can knock her down and free himself again. Upon his return, Vic checks Alice's restraints and finds the cell phone in Alice's pocket. When he recognizes the last police number dialed there, he beats Alice to tell the truth. She reveals to Vic that Danny wants to take all of the ransom for himself and Alice.

Vic is shocked by this scam, especially since he and Danny are not only partners but have been in a homosexual relationship since spending time in prison together. But he leaves Danny in the dark that Alice told him about his plan. Instead, he numbs Alice with an injection and takes her to another hiding place in a remote warehouse as planned for the cash delivery. Then he leads Danny to the alleged transfer point of the money in the forest, which he had planned as the place for his shooting from the start. However, after a scuffle, Danny escapes with a gunshot wound. Vic returns to the warehouse to give Alice another injection. He is surprised by the returning Danny, who knocks him down and shoots him next to the chained Alice. Then he takes the money and leaves the warehouse, but without releasing Alice. Before Vic dies, he can get a second set of keys from his pocket and push them to Alice so that she can free herself.

She walks barefoot down the deserted street. After a few kilometers she finds the car with Danny who died of his injuries. She pulls the corpse out of the car and, after stopping again and let her tears run wild, drives away with the ransom.

background

The film was shot entirely in the Isle of Man , including Douglas and Ramsey . The shooting was completed within four weeks. Most of the scenes were shot in chronological order. The budget for the film is estimated at $ 800,000 .

The first five and a half minutes of the film do without any dialogue, as does the following four minutes.

J Blakeson was inspired by On a Gloomy Afternoon and Bounty - One To Pay for the script. Martin Compston was cast for the role of Danny two weeks before shooting began. With this production Eddie Marsan was involved in the third film production, which he shot in 2008 on the Isle of Man. The other two films are Heartless and Me & Orson Welles . For the two main male actors, their kiss is the first film kiss with a male actor.

Gemma Arterton declined to resort to a double for her nude scenes , preferring to act these scenes herself to actually feel fear. She was given a safe word that she could use to stop the filming at any time. Even in the non-filmed scenes, she insisted on remaining handcuffed to the bed to reinforce the authenticity of her role. In the scene where she is hit by Vic, she actually received an accidental slap in the face from Eddie Marsan.

The scenes in and outside the warehouse that can be seen towards the end of the film were filmed in February, which is why the barefoot leading actress, who is only lightly dressed, had to warm up between the shots.

criticism

"An excellently played crime thriller that creates tension despite some constructed story elements."

“The slim basic structure proves to be a real stroke of luck and opens up a nerve-wracking chamber game. 'Without a trace' captivates as a dense psychological thriller until shortly before the final act, but then loses the red thread with sprawling twists and turns and ends up only in the upper middle of the genre.
