The 12th British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) ceremony took place on December 6, 2009 at The Brewery conference and event center in London. As in the previous five years, the event was hosted by actor James Nesbitt .

The award for the best directorial debut (Douglas Hickox Award) went this year to Duncan Jones , the son of pop legend David Bowie , who also received the award for best British independent film for his science fiction thriller Moon .

The film drama Fish Tank also received two awards , for which Andrea Arnold received the award for best director and Katie Jarvis the award for the most promising newcomer.
