The Boys Are Back (Original title: The Boys Are Back ) is an Australian-British drama directed by Scott Hicks from 2009, based on the 2001 autobiographical novel The Boys Are Back In Town by Simon Carr and thus on true events based.

action

The successful British sports reporter Joe Warr is a second marriage to his wife Katy and their son Artie on the border to the outback in South Australia . When Katy, who suffers from cancer , dies, Joe's world collapses. The father, who is seriously suffering from the loss, is now alone with the task of facing his professional challenges, taking care of the household and taking care of the upbringing of his six-year-old son Artie. In Laura, the mother of a school friend of Artie's, Joe finds active support who helps him with the household every now and then and also takes Artie to him when Joe has to travel around the globe for professional reasons. The helpful blonde is noticeably more dissatisfied with this role.

While on the phone with Harry, Joe's 14-year-old son from his first marriage, he got the idea to visit his father during the summer vacation in Australia. His mother, who lives with him in London , is initially unhappy with the idea, but eventually lets him leave.

Although Harry and Artie get along from the first minute, Joe is completely overwhelmed with the two boys and decides to a relaxed regiment within his own four walls. From now on he follows the philosophy that what is fun is allowed. Then the chaos creeps into the male household and the tensions between the three increase.

In order to save time and have more time for his children, Joe decides not to cover the Australian Open by being in the stadium himself , but by following the television broadcasts. A work colleague warns him that his boss has tickets for the men's final. As a result, Joe has to leave for Melbourne in such a rush that he can no longer find a supervisor for his sons. Instead, he remains with them that they will keep in touch by phone. This works surprisingly well until teenagers Harry met at a party on the beach gain access to Joe's house to have a lavish party against Harry and Artie's wishes.

The almost traumatized Harry contacts Joe's mother-in-law Barbara and lets her put him on the plane back to London the following day. At the same time she takes Artie into her care.

When Joe returns from Melbourne, the looming trouble with his mother-in-law is inevitable. Although she does not like his upbringing methods, she lets him go on his way with Artie. Both Artie and Joe realize they miss Harry and decide to join him in London.

In London, Joe's ex-wife and Harry's mother visit Flick to convince Harry to return to Australia permanently with them. At first the undertaking seems hopeless. Finally, however, Joe and Harry speak out, who has been wondering why his father left him since childhood. Joe gives him the honest answer that he assumed that a child should grow up with his mother and that he expected this to be the best for Harry. Harry then confesses that he has wished all his life to live with his father.

Finally, Joe and Artie return to Australia with Harry.

Soundtrack

The nine music tracks by the Icelandic band Sigur Rós were originally only planned as provisional film music . However, when the director Scott Hicks noticed that they perfectly captured the mood he intended, he made his way to Iceland to present the film to the band, which is considered to be restrictive in the exploitation of their music, and personally from the band obtain permission to use the music in the film. Hicks chose other Australian artists to complete the soundtrack.

Finally, on March 30, 2010, Phantom Sound & Vision released the soundtrack for the film, which contains 19 music tracks.

criticism

According to Carmen Böker from the Berliner Zeitung , the film is “simply ready-made goods for a contemplative evening with a handkerchief”.

Timo Buschkämper from the editorial team of filmreporter.de saw a film whose director is able to repeat the “positive first impression” from Shine - The Path into Light . He is equally satisfied with the work in front of and behind the camera: “ Hicks puts Clive Owen in the focus of his production and he thanks him with a convincing performance. The supporting roles are also brilliantly cast, especially Emma Booth and George MacKay leave a positive impression. A sure eye for the basic conflict of the narrative prevents Hicks from slipping into kitsch. Both the setting and the narrative rhythm are consistent. In the end, there is a work that seriously deals with topics such as death and loneliness, without foregoing a pinch of humor. "

"The sensitive drama, which impressively depicts the challenges of a single father," says the Computer Bild editorial team and its cast. " Nicholas McAnulty , who shines as the lively Artie, is extremely present, but George MacKay's performance as the more withdrawn Harry must be recognized in the same way."

Nominations and Awards

In 2009 George MacKay was nominated for Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards , but had to admit defeat to Katie Jarvis , who was honored for her role in Fish Tank . In 2010, George MacKay was nominated for the "Best British Newcomers" category at the London Critics Circle Film Awards .
