action

15-year-old Mia dropped out of school. Her only great passion is hip hop dance. Together with her little sister Tyler, Mia lives in precarious circumstances with their single mother Joanne in Essex, England . One day she brings her new friend Connor home with her, who quickly takes on the role of father for the two girls. He supports Mia in applying for a dance casting. Mia soon falls in love with Connor's winning manner, which is very different from the loveless treatment by the alcoholic mother.

While Joanne is drunk in bed one evening, Connor seduces Mia. The next morning Connor has disappeared without saying goodbye. Mia immediately goes to Connor's home and breaks in there. Horrified, she realizes that Connor is married and has a little daughter himself. When he comes home with his family, they escape and shortly afterwards kidnap Connor's daughter Keira, who she runs into on the street. They wander aimlessly through the fields on the coast. When the girl gets restless and wants to go home, Mia gets angry. An argument breaks out, and finally Mia pushes the child into deep water and only barely can pull it out again. When she comes to her senses, she brings the soaked and freezing child back to the parents' house. A little later, it's long been dark, Connor tracks her down, runs after her across a meadow, gives her a violent slap in the face and leaves again. Mia remains stunned in the meadow.

The next day, Mia's longed-for dance casting turns out to be a cheap table dance event. She leaves the stage without comment, without showing her dance that has been rehearsed for days. To avoid being sent to a girls' boarding school, Mia leaves her family. In Wales she wants to start a new life with her boyfriend Billy.

Reviews

Fish Tank received a positive response from the critics. The German film portal kino.de certifies that Andrea Arnold has a good knack for real dramas and particularly emphasizes the outstanding performance of Katie Jarvis.

Peter Bradshaw from the English Guardian praised the performance of the director Andrea Arnold and described her as a natural successor of Ken Loach . The performance of the main actress Katie Jarvis, her relationship with Connor portrayed by Michael Fassbender , gives the film its heartbeat.

Thorsten Funke from critic.de thinks this is a multi-layered film full of ambivalent characters. He also emphasizes the young amateur actress' strong performance: "To read the conflicting feelings on the face of Katie Jarvis, who is playing her first film role here, is sensational."
