action

Stephen lives secluded in his apartment, which he has not left for a year. He remembers taking a trip across Europe with his friend Bunny after the two won £ 2,500 in a horse race . In Poland they met the Spaniard Eloisa, with whom Stephen fell in love, but who began an affair with Bunny. Together the three made their way to Spain. There they met Javier, Eloisa's brother, from whom Bunny wanted to learn everything about bullfighting .

While Stephen approached Eloisa and slept with her, Bunny stole a torero costume from Javier , which he then lost while playing cards. When Eloisa found out about this, she was angry with the two men, which is why they left her. During a train ride, Stephen Bunny made remarks, whereupon he pulled the emergency brake, got off the train and fought a bull in a meadow. He was impaled and killed by the bull.

In the course of his memories Stephen has several visions in which the dead Bunny and other people they met during their journey appear to him. When Bunny makes it clear to him in one of these visions that he is not to blame for Bunny's death, he gains new courage to face life. He calls Eloisa and leaves the apartment to make his way to Spain.
