The 11th British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) ceremony took place on November 30, 2008 at Old Billingsgate in London .
The winner of the evening was the film drama Slumdog Millionaire , which was awarded three prizes. In addition to the award for the best film, Danny Boyle received the award for best director and Dev Patel for his portrayal of the street boy Jamal the award for the best newcomer.
See Colin Farrell's comedy Bruges ... and die? was only able to win the award for best screenplay despite seven nominations.
The event was again hosted by James Nesbitt , who received an award in 2002 for his portrayal of Northern Irish politician Ivan Cooper in Paul Greengrass ' drama Bloody Sunday .
