Vera Ann Farmiga (born August 6, 1973 in Clifton , Passaic County , New Jersey ) is an American actress and director .

Life and accomplishments

Farmiga comes from a family of immigrants from Ukraine . Since she grew up with her six siblings in a Ukrainian community, she did not learn the English language until the age of six. In her youth she performed with a Ukrainian folk group. First she attended a Ukrainian Catholic school, then she studied at the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University .

Farmiga made her debut in 1996 in Broadway - theater plays . In the film drama For the Life of a Friend (1998) she starred alongside Vince Vaughn , Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix . In the film drama It began in September (2000) she played the role of Lisa Tyler , the daughter of Will Keane , who played Richard Gere . In the action film 15 Minutes of Fame (2001), she appeared alongside Robert De Niro and Edward Burns . In the 2002 film Dummy she played an unemployment counselor who looks after the outsider Steven. The film was mostly only shown at film festivals and released on DVD.

For her leading role in the film drama Down to the Bone (2004) she won a special award at the Sundance Film Festival and a prize at the Festival International du Film de Marrakech in 2004 and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award in 2005 . She was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 2005.

Her biggest film role to date, through which she also achieved greater notoriety, she had in the film Departed - Unter Feinden from 2006, in which she played alongside Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio , which received four Academy Awards , among others .

In 2009 she played alongside George Clooney in Up in the Air . The role of businesswoman Alex Goran earned her an Oscar nomination (best supporting female role).

In 2011 she made her directorial debut with the film Higher Ground , in which she also played the lead role Corinne . Since the film also shows her character's teenage years, Farmiga looked for a young actress who looked like her. For this role she won over her younger sister Taissa , who made her acting debut in this film.

In January 2012 she was cast alongside Patrick Wilson for James Wan's horror thriller film Conjuring . From 2013 to 2017 she played the lead role of Norma Louise Bates in the TV series Bates Motel, based on the novel Psycho .

Farmiga was married to actor Sebastian Roché from 1997 to 2005 . In 2008 she married Renn Hawkey. She gave birth to a son in January 2009 and a daughter in November 2010.
