action
Insurance broker and former police officer Michael MacCauley, an Irish immigrant, has been commuting to Manhattan by train from the small suburb where he lives with his family for ten years . When he is released one day without warning, he desperately meets with Alex Murphy, his former partner in the police force, for a drink; after that he gets on the train for the last time that is supposed to take him home. Exactly this trip, however, is different than usual. First, Michael's cell phone is stolen. Then a strange woman, who introduces herself to him as Joanna, approaches him and after a while makes him a seemingly hypothetical offer: If he manages to locate a certain passenger named "Prynne" at the end of the train , waving him 100,000 dollars. The catch is that the woman only gives him two very vague references to the unknown person and the end of the line will be reached in less than an hour.
Due to his surprising unemployment and the desire to still be able to finance his son's expensive tuition fees, he accepts the first deposit of $ 25,000 and thus the offer. Later, however, it becomes clear that not only the lives of all fellow travelers, but also that of Michael's family will be in danger if he refuses to track down the person. So he has no choice but to go looking for the passenger in question. In the course of the search, MacCauley engages the passengers in conversations. He finally manages to make out six passengers who fit the description and is asked by a middleman from "Joanna" to identify the suspect so that he can kill her. After a violent scuffle, he instead throws the middleman off the train. Joanna contacts him and demands that he must murder the target himself in order to save his family.
MacCauley realizes that a young woman must be the wanted person, and instead of killing her, he asks the conductor at gunpoint to pull the emergency brake so as not to risk human lives. But the brakes have been tampered with, the braking system fails and the train threatens to derail. Before that, however, MacCauley and the train conductor manage to separate the last car, in which all the passengers are, from the rest of the train. The unavoidable accident is therefore mild, but the train attendant is killed. It turns out that the wanted person is a witness to a murder committed by the police and should therefore be liquidated.
The derailed wagon is surrounded by police officers whose suspicions are directed at MacCauley as an alleged hostage-taker. It comes to a showdown between MacCauley and his former colleague Murphy, who turns out to be a hit man in the service of an unknown organization. After a fierce fight, Murphy is shot by the snipers because MacCauley has taken his transponder, which identifies him as one of theirs to the snipers, unnoticed and Murphy is therefore mistaken for MacCauley. MacCauley's wife and son remain unharmed and arrive at the scene of the accident shortly after the showdown.
Some time later "Joanna" is found by MacCauley during another train ride. He talks to her the same way he did then and concludes that it was not Murphy who put the witness on his usual turn, it was she who manipulated him and Murphy. When she asked what was happening now, he replied: "Just a little thing ..." and happily holds his police badge under her eyes before the film fades out: he has resumed his old job as a policeman through his courageous actions.

Reviews
The film received mixed reviews from critics. Knut Elstermann from MDR Kultur said: "Director Jaume Collet-Serra is very entertaining, but fortunately always gives his star enough space to unfold the well-matured charm".
Frank Schnelle from epd Film says: “In classic Hollywood he would have been a real B-filmer , at home in all genres, very familiar with the rules of the trade, specializing in straightforward stories. B-films haven't been around for a long time, at least not in the cinema, but Jaume Collet-Serra shoots some anyway: technically pompous, with big stars, but essentially 'just' dirty little thrillers that don't want anymore than entertaining entertaining ". Above all, he praises the cinematography in the film, but criticizes the script, which in the end seems implausible.
The film service judges: “The brilliantly elaborated and suggestively photographed thriller touches the moral dilemma of the protagonist rather marginally. Instead, the atmospheric design of the claustrophobic setting and the stringently dynamic staging are all the more impressive. "
