history
MDR culture (1992-2004)
On January 1, 1992, a cultural program called MDR Kultur started under the name Das Zuhör-Radio . The program covered many facets of culture . In the programs for children, for artistic words, for music and talk , puzzles and desired music, MDR Kultur offered varied content. There were own programs every day from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., broadcast and conceived as a daily accompanying program for the broadest possible group of listeners interested in culture. During the day there were current background reports on culture, politics, society, family, education and everyday culture at MDR Kultur . In the evenings and on weekends, MDR Kultur broadcast radio plays, features , readings, radio talks and children's radio . From a musical point of view, the program mainly consisted of regional productions. That is why there were concerts by the orchestras and choirs of the MDR as well as outstanding performances by regional orchestras and choirs from Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. The variety of programs was expanded to include jazz , chanson , film music, world music and sophisticated pop.
Program until the end of 2003

In the “millennium year” 1999 there was the series “Meine liebe…! Dear ...! ”Letters of a Century, in which actors read a letter (or an excerpt from a longer letter) from a mostly prominent personality of the 20th century every day. From 2000 to 2004 the series Fundus with mostly humorous or aphoristic essays and short texts, which were also spoken by well-known actors, was broadcast on the same slot . Selected contributions from these two series have also been published as CD collections.
triangle
Triangle, “the radio for reading”, was a brochure accompanying the program by MDR Kultur and Figaro. It was named after the accentuating percussion instrument , the three-sided shape of which was also an allusion to the three countries in the broadcasting area. The monthly brochure of approx. 160 pages informed the subscribers about the program, various events, external productions and live recordings of the MDR, but also provided detailed articles about central German cultural events, music and radio history. Triangle was published until the beginning of 2008.
MDR Figaro (2004-2016)
On January 1, 2004, the program was restructured and renamed MDR Figaro . “Figaro” had previously been the name of two programs on MDR Kultur, the journals Figaro in the morning and Figaro in the afternoon . Some program elements (reading time, concerts, radio plays and features) have been retained. On the other hand, more content from everyday culture should be included in the program.
In 2009 the Neue Musikzeitung (NMZ) criticized the broadcast concept and content of MDR Figaro . The NMZ also complained about the lack of an editorial office for new music and the direct consequences for the station's cultural mission.
MDR Culture (since 2016)
On February 18, 2016 it was announced that MDR Figaro would be renamed MDR Kultur again on May 2, 2016 . As early as March 2016, the MDR presented its new cultural portal MDR-KULTUR.de to the public at the Leipzig Book Fair , in which all cultural content on radio, television and the Internet, which was previously distributed on different pages of the MDR, is now presented on one platform . Since then, offers have been bundled in social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Soundcloud and of course MDR's own community. As part of this bundling, since the renewed name change on May 2, 2016, the radio station has been broadcasting its program again under the MDR Kultur brand .
