ARD Digital is the name of digital television - bouquets of ARD .

General

It is Germany well over cable ( DVB-C ), the satellite Astra ( DVB-S ), and IPTV broadcast. Some of the programs on offer can also be received via terrestrial television via antenna ( DVB-T ).

Currently, including the regional versions, 33 television and 63 radio programs in DVB standard are transmitted via ARD Digital. The community programs 3sat and KiKA as well as the programs of the Deutschlandradio are distributed by the ZDF.

The play-out center (POC) for these programs is located in Potsdam at the RBB , where the ARD digital coordination is also located. Furthermore, the compiled data stream of the POC from Potsdam is transmitted to the Astra satellites, from where it is also fed into the cable networks. Other locations are Frankfurt am Main and Langenberg . Another part of the programs is compiled here ( multiplex process ) and transmitted to the satellite ( uplink ).

If the television does not have an integrated digital tuner, a suitable digital television receiver ( set-top box ) according to the DVB standard is required for reception . Since the channels are broadcast free-to-air (FTA), i.e. unencrypted, there are no additional costs for reception.

On March 19, 2008, as part of the ARD quality offensive, ARD changed the satellite transponders from ARD Digital in order to transmit the programs via cable and satellite with a higher bandwidth. In addition, all regional programs are fed into the cable networks, as are other radio programs, and Bavarian television will in future be broadcast via cable and satellite as Bavarian TV North and Bavarian TV South . Until June 2, 2008, the broadcasters EinsExtra , EinsFestival , EinsPlus , Arte , Phoenix and Radio Bremen TV were broadcast simultaneously on the old and the new transponder; ARD-alpha until mid-2009. Since then, the programs have been transmitted via transponder 51 on Astra 1KR , 19.2 ° East at 10.74375 GHz and 22,000 MSym / s symbol rate.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, since April 12, 2011, DVB-C has been feeding the local time and an adjacent version in addition to the nationally distributed local time in Cologne (in the Cologne area, two adjacent versions to get a total of three versions).

With the exception of Deutsche Welle, ARD Digital generally broadcasts all ARD television programs via satellite. In the cable networks, however, the offer can vary, as there is not enough space for an HD / SD simulcast in the undeveloped networks. A restricted offer is transmitted via DVB-T2. 3sat and KiKA are distributed via the capacities of ZDF.

Since January 7, 2019, all television programs have also been broadcast in high definition ( HD ). At WDR television, the ten non-Cologne local time editions can currently only be broadcast in SD due to capacity reasons.

Except for the option of WDR local time, all television programs (some of them in reduced quality, with geoblocking and / or without broadcasts / contributions that are problematic under license law) are offered on their websites as live web TV.

From January 12, 2021, all television programs should only be broadcast in high definition, at least via satellite; this was confirmed both for the first five programs listed below and for the third programs (except for MDR television).

Multiplexes for DVB-T2

The broadcasters united in ARD decide for themselves which programs from the digital ARD bouquet to broadcast via DVB-T2 . To this end, they usually operate two multiplexes, sometimes in cooperation. In Bremen and Hamburg, a minimux is also used for the locally responsible third-party television program. In addition, ZDF operates a nationwide identical multiplex that also contains the ARD holdings 3sat and KiKA . In return, the ARD multiplexes Phoenix and ARTE broadcast with the participation of ZDF. The ARD broadcasters broadcast the following programs via their DVB-T2 multiplexes:

• ARTE
• One and Phoenix (both not in South Tyrol)
• Third-party television programs from the seven large broadcasters, partly interrupted by regional windows from neighboring regions

• ARD-alpha (only in Bavaria)

In Austria ( SimpliTV ) and South Tyrol ( RAS , currently still in the old DVB-T), some broadcasts are still in SD.

Although technically possible, there is currently no concrete plan to also broadcast ARD radio programs via DVB-T2. The WDR prematurely stopped broadcasting individual programs in Berlin via the DVB-T, which has now been switched off there. ARD chairman Peter Boudgoust is quoted in this regard, however, "they will be advised internally whether and in what form a new application is submitted to the KEF".

Except for BR Verkehr, all radio programs (mostly in reduced quality; some with temporary geo-blocking) are offered on their websites as live web radio; Bayern 1, Bayern 2, MDR Schlagerwelt, NDR 1, NDR 2, NDR Info, SWR4 and WDR 2 even with the option of regional news.

With the digitization and the start of the bouquet, interactive additional offers were also launched. Initially, the mhp standard was used.

Using an mhp-capable decoder and a remote control, viewers could find out about programs and program content in the ARD portal, the ARD online channel and the ticker, actively participate in the programs, vote in surveys and quizzes, and find the latest information on sporting events in the ticker. and inform about results. The editorial offices of ARD Digital redesigned these services again and again and kept them up to date. Mhp was not available via DVB-T. In the meantime, the distribution has been stopped due to insufficient use.

In 2010, however, the new HbbTV was put into operation, which is the standard in Europe for merging Internet and television. In addition to the provision of an EPG, this also enables the broadcast of digital teletext, digital subtitles and the use of the media libraries on the television, and thus time-shifted television.
