Dragon rider from Pern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dragons of Pern is a cycle of science fiction - novels by Anne McCaffrey and following her son Todd McCaffrey .

Anne McCaffrey describes a planet called "Pern" which is colonized by colonizers . Over time, they forget their origins and their technical knowledge , not least caused by the completely surprising first "thread fall", and fall back into a medieval society . Every 200 years Pern regularly approaches another planet in its orbit - the “Red Star”. In the process, egg-shaped capsules detach from the surface of the Red Star and develop into deadly, thread-like spores in the Pern atmosphere, called “threads” in the parlance of the inhabitants of Pern. Even the colonists recognized that only fire, water, stone and metal can put a stop to these all-engulfing threads. In order to fight these, the native, airworthy fire lizards are bred to become dragons , and a power group develops, the dragon riders.

Building society

discovery

PERN k (parallel earth , resources irrelevant; suitable for colonization) was discovered by an exploration and surveying team from the FSP (Federated Sentient Planets) and released for colonization. The team, which has been greatly reduced by accidents, examines the planet for a few days, discovering "burned-out" circles, the mushroom that is later used for lights, and fire lizard eggs. The world seems idyllic, although some disturbing facts must remain unanswered (the circles Oort cloud in the system), the world will as PERN K marked.

colonization

The settlement takes place 200 years later by a group of idealists and war veterans under the direction of Paul Benden and Emily Boll.

The goal is to build an agricultural low-tech society that should exist as a loose federation of independent landowners. There are intentionally few high-tech devices that are also designed for long-term but infrequent use. On the southern continent, the colonists first settle at the landing site in order to choose their lands. Some will soon move to their lands, others will stay in Landing . The colonists still have aircraft, stone cutters and radios at their disposal , and a few were already tending fire lizards when the first drop of thread the colony experienced fell on Landing eight years after landing .

The effect is devastating; many residents of already populated areas die. People are in shock, but many remember the behavior of the fire lizards who spat fires, warned people and drove cattle into caves. Kitti Ping Yung, geneticist and Eridani adept, is asked to modify the genes of the fire lizards in such a way that an air defense for Pern would be created. (Source Drachendämmerung / Dragonsdawn)

Two years later, the first dragons have just hatched, one of the volcanoes suddenly becomes active again at Landing and announces an eruption. Burg Fort is founded in no time, and when the volcano erupts, the population of Landing (and the lands, if desired) is evacuated to the northern continent in an adventurous boat trip. (The northern continent was chosen because of the available cave complexes and bedrock.)

The fever year breaks out again six years later, and after the dragon riders have already turned their backs on Fort Castle, Pierre de Courcis founds Fort Boll in memory of his partner Emily, who died the previous year of fever. Two years later, Red Hanrahan moves out and founds Ruatha Castle.

More people are now moving out, also to prevent such devastating epidemics in the future. There is a fight between three dragon queens at Fort Weyr, which is now bursting at the seams, and Sean calls out three new Weyr the following year (source: The Chronicles of Pern: Arrival).

Thread fall and fever year wiped out many people in the prime of their lives, besides much has been destroyed by thread fall ; The return to a low-tech society is taking place much faster than expected, as important knowledge is lost, even stable equipment can no longer be operated, and mobility is restricted. The phases of thread fall (approx. 50 years) and interval (approx. 200 years) are difficult to keep track of, and nevertheless preparations have to be made.

A society is established that consists of the following leading estates, which meet in meetings and tackle global problems, but which are completely autonomous on internal issues:

Barons

The barons represent the nobility and are mostly men, while baronesses are rare, such as Janissian from Burg Boll. The title of baron is inherited. They own and administer the land and together hold political power in their hands. Self-sufficient in themselves, they are only subject to the rules of the Charter, the law of the first settlers. Decisions are made in the so-called "conclave". Every baron rules a 'castle', his tenants are subordinate to him and live in a relationship of dependence on the barons.

In order to guarantee the ability of the dragon riders to act during the thread incursions, these 'castles' pay taxes to the Weyr (in the form of food, fabrics, etc.).

Guilds

Different trades (blacksmiths, weavers, ...) are organized in guilds . There are generally 3 'ranks': apprentice, journeyman, master. In addition, one of the masters is also the head of the entire corresponding guild of Pern. Guilds are independent of the barons. Certain guilds have special positions such as the Harper Guild and the Healers Guild.

  • Fishermen / Seamen (Main Hall Tillek): The fishermen's guild includes all people who owe their purchase to the sea. Fishing, seafaring, shipbuilding and processing, and in some cases also trade, are subordinate to the fishing guild. Idarolan is probably the best-known master fisherman in the books, known as an intelligent idea generator and quite hard-drinking (usually Robinton drunk him under the table at most) lovable fur seal, who can tackle and is true to his principles. Depending on the era, women are more or less accepted on board (calamity to equality). The fishing hall also maintains (albeit very loose) contact with the dolphins, which were originally taken along and were forgotten in the hectic of the thread fall (which only prepares them a feast in the water). With Readis, the dolphin hall will be re-established (in Aki's time). The first master fisherman was Jim Tillek.
  • Webergilde / Schneider: (Main Hall (South) Boll): The weaving and tailoring were in the hands of Zurg in Lessa's time. Almost every castle has its own fabric or knitting pattern, which are often adapted to the climate or have origins in pre-colonial (earth) culture.
  • Mining Guild: (Main Hall Crom): The mining guild mines flint for the weyr, coal, metals and precious stones. They find occurrences and exploit them. The northern continent is generally sparsely blessed with raw materials. In Lessa's time, Nicat is the leader of the guild. The mining guild works closely with the blacksmithing guild, which processes the raw materials. Precious stones and many metals are only of jewelery value on Pern because they are relatively common and not usable except for jewelery.
  • Blacksmiths Guild: (Main Hall Telgar): In Lessa's time, Fandarel is the charismatic leader of the guild and probably (with Akki) a man of the times, his favorite word is efficient. Here metals are processed, flamethrowers and all other utensils are made of metal. From the blacksmith's guild emerge the glass hall and the wood processing hall (wood industry has only recently become possible again with the worms) and the star guild (which deals with observing the sky) as well as the computer hall. These new halls are also being built in the era of the battery.
  • Dealers: The dealers are not organized in that sense. There are northern (Lilcamps) and southern (nomads, Bedouin-like) trader families who don't have much to do with each other. Most of the time the plot is limited to one type of it. Die Renegaten von Pern describes, among other things, the life of the Lilcamp clan's merchants in recent times. Traders are traditionally not tied to any castle, but mostly spend the winter and / or threads in the castle where they work, repair their wagons and let the children learn the new ballads. In Dragon Twilight it is explicitly mentioned that many travelers, Tuareg and Yeniche were among the colonists and most of them dispersed to the winds immediately after landing. Most of them died on the southern continent in the first thread fall seven years later, since most of them were not in contact with them. In any case, the ancestor of the Lilcamps is obviously Joel Liliencamp, magazine administrator of the colony and gifted with an eidetic memory.
  • Lederer (main hall Igen): They make all parts from leather and also handle the trade in the furs. Since not enough plant material is available at all times and fabrics can be very expensive, leather is very popular at certain times. The riding girths of the dragon riders are also made of leather (whereby the dragon rider usually sews the harness himself).
  • Animal hall / veterinarians / Beastcrafthall (main hall Keroon): Here breeders, veterinarians, keepers, herd masters and riders are trained for all farm animals. Ruatha is particularly known for horses / racers, although in Moreta's time many good breeding animals were lost due to the disease (zoonosis, humans and racers) that Red Hanrahan founded. Other original Renner breeder families have also survived to the present day.
  • Farmer's Guild (Nerat main hall): Andemon is probably one of the most sought-after guild masters of the recent times, alongside Robinton and Oldive. Shouldn't "watch out for the worms" mean that they should be destroyed, but that they should be protected. However, the discovery is spectacular as the worms protect the plants from thread damage.
  • Heilerhalle (main hall Fort): Ginia hands over the management of the Heilerhalle to Oldive. The healer hall usually stands above all others about disputes. She generally sends her people everywhere and they are accepted there. With Akki a lot of knowledge is regained, which some healers don't like at all. Operations were sparsely carried out and when Akki brought them up to date, it mainly aroused rejection among the population.
  • Harper Hall (main hall, Fort): Robinton is called in to be the master harvester, just as he later does that with Sebell. The Harpnerhalle has the task of educating the population of Pern, of reminding everyone of their rights and duties (often in the form of songs) and often also of the function of judges and arbitrators. During Menolly's time at the Harpnerhalle, lessons are given in: instrument making, composition, music theory, vocal training, archiving, plus sports and duties such as working on the drum tower (where drum signals are also learned). Certain apprentices are subordinate to a master and are trained and promoted by them. Like his predecessor Gennell, Robinton also has one or two spies (usually very naughty but resourceful apprentices).

Often the lord's daughters and sons are also taken in here (the exchange of foster parents is very common in Pern).

  • Couriers: Couriers are widespread and are the main means of long-distance communication for ordinary residents of Pern, but they are rarely dealt with directly in the stories. They are very neutral and every station (where the couriers rest) is very autonomous and discreet. In Runner of Pern, however, the guild is described in more detail and, like other guilds, it seems to be passed on mainly in the family and there is great pride in one's own contribution to Pern

Dragon riders and dragons

Dragon rider

The dragon riders are also outside the political order of the nobility. Their home is Weyr, high in the mountains, some of which are laid out in extinct volcanoes . Due to their special role, for example as a 'savior' in times of thread fall and 'parasite' in the long interim, conflicts between barons and dragon riders are an important theme in the novels. The dragon riders are organized in "Weyrn", huge cave complexes with autonomous administration and their own herds, the castles have to pay a fee to supply the Weyr, which, however, may have to be demanded by force at intervals. The Weyr is led by the rider of the golden dragon queen and the rider of the dragon who flew her on her last mating flight. The Weyrführer leads the squadrons in the fight against the threads, the Weyrherrin leads the administration and pays attention to the mental and physical condition of the riders and organizes the further care of the Weyrs. In most cases, the dragon queen mates with the dragon, for whose rider the Weyrherrin has personal preferences. The individual Weyr are autonomous, but they usually maintain an exchange of information, either telepathically or personally. Burgerben are not allowed to be dragon riders, it has to be decided whether one accepts the duty of the castle or that of the Weyrs.

Dragons

The dragons were originally bred from the small fire lizards by genetic engineering by Kit Ping Yung, one of the first settlers . Immediately after hatching, you bond telepathically to one of the selected candidates, this partnership ends in most cases only with the death of both. A dragon whose rider dies immediately commits suicide, but there are riders who have lost their dragons and still live on. The species masters teleportation , which is practiced by dragons and riders during the one to two year basic training. The dragons receive the place to jump from their rider. If he fails to give them these coordinates, both of them get lost in the “in between”, the space that the dragons cross when teleporting. There is total sensory deprivation there . Dragons can also travel within time. However, this is dangerous and is only undertaken in exceptional cases. Dragons have two stomachs, one they use for digestion and the other to break up rocks containing phosphine and thus create bursts of flames.

There are five different colors of dragons:

The green females are fast and agile, they are the smallest dragons. Due to the constant chewing of flint, they are sterile, but they too rise to mating flight.
The blue kites are smaller and form the back cover of the squadron
The brown dragons are persistent fighters. They can grow almost as big as bronze kites.
The bronze dragons are the leaders. Only the queens whose mating partners they are stand above them. They are the strongest and most enduring dragons, and almost all leadership positions in the Weyrn are bronze riders.
The golden dragon queens are the largest dragons on Pern. At irregular intervals they rise to mating flight, more often than usual during a passage of the migrating planet. It is rare that fewer than three queens live in the same weyr. The golden dragons attach themselves exclusively to girls and women. Golden dragons don't eat flint (although there is a contradictory explanation of what happens if they do), the riders (if there are enough) are equipped with flamethrowers and burn the last lost threads.
Ruth is an exception in many ways. The little white dragon (although it actually combines all colors) is a "backflash" in the early days of kite breeding. He is about the same size as the first generation dragons (a fire lizard that turned out to be too big), but also has some mental abilities that his great parents long ago lost. It can jump in time very precisely and, in the opinion of its owner, often acts on its own.

characters

(Twilight of the Dragon, Chronicles of Pern, partly Dragon's Blood)

Colonists (not born on Pern)

  • Admiral Paul Benden, leader of the expedition and commander of the colonist ship Yokohama, a hero of the Nathi Wars
  • Governor Emily Boll, with Paul Benden, head of the colony (formerly Governor of Tau Ceti)

  • Chief pilot Kenyo Fusayuki, shuttle pilot, is killed by Avril Bitra
  • Zi Ongola, war veteran and pilot, later founded Tillek Castle
  • Pilot Sallah Telgar, shuttle pilot, wife of Tarvi Andiyar (later Telgar) and first heroine of Pern.
  • Chief engineer Fulmar Stone, with his team and other specialists he digs the first castles and weyrs in the north
  • Chief geologist Tarvi Andiyar, first lord of Telgar castle
  • Astrogator Avril Bitra, is a descendant of a member of the PERN discovery team. She would like to flee to “civilized” territory with the rich treasures of Pern, which Sallah successfully prevents.
  • Nahbi Nabol
  • Bart Lemos, Nabol and Lemos first team up with Avril, but are betrayed by her and can restore their honor through a last service to the colony
  • Sean O'Connell is from Ireland and came to Pern with his parents (travelers). Sean and Sorka discover the fire lizards and also bind the first specimens to themselves. He becomes the first to actually ride his kite and the first Weyrführer of Pern
  • Red Hanrahan, from Ireland, came to Pern with his wife Mairi and children Brian and Sorka. He founds the Ruatha Castle (Rua atha → Red's Furt) and the most important horse / racing breed in Pern.
  • Sorka Hanrahan, first owner of a fire lizard and first Weyrherrin von Pern, her dragon Faranth will not be forgotten (with Faranth's egg!) And she is also the first to hear all dragons.
  • Kitti Ping Yung, geneticist, designer of the Pern kites
  • Windblüte (granddaughter of Kitti), geneticist, designer of the Wachwhere von Pern (see also below)
  • Cherry Duff, she takes on the role of a justice of the peace at the beginning
  • Joel Liliencamp, magazine manager and ancestor of the Lilcamp dealer caravan

(1NL * Torene Ostrovsky is born, descendant of the miner and rider from Alaranth and first Weyrherrin von Benden (with Sorkas and Sean's son Michael / Mihall), she too has the ability to hear all dragons)

Second interval / third pass

These characters appear in the latest novels, they are subject to constant change:

  • Kindan / K'dan: Harper and dragon rider, he comes from Camp Natalon and lost his family in a mine accident at an early age. He spent his youth in the Harpnerhalle and Burg Fort while the plague raged. He had the idea of handing out face masks to prevent the germs from spreading. Later he becomes Weyrharfner, Weyerlingmeiter and finally also rider of the bronze Lurenth. He lost his first love, Koriana, daughter of the not enthusiastic Lord Bemin of Fort, to the plague. Except for Lord Bemin, only his youngest daughter Fiona survives. He is in a relationship with Lorana.
  • Lorana: She was chosen by the golden Arith, who fell ill and perished from the dragon plague. At the same time, her death provides the key to saving the dragons from this disease. Thanks to good care and the goal of saving the dragons, Lorana recovers from the loss and lives on without her queen. She too hears all dragons, and she “feels” them even more (how dragons perceive each other).
  • Wind Blossom: Wind Blossom is listed here because she and her team (her daughter Emorra, Tieran - descendant of Tedd Tubbermanns - and others) provide the opportunity to heal dragons in the present (see Dragon's Blood).
  • Nuella: Nuella comes from the same village as Kindan (Camp Natalon) and is the blind daughter of the local leader. She takes over Kindan's guard Kisk who becomes Nuellsk and after she dies she receives the golden egg of the last tamed guard queen. You and the golden Nuellask are the final proof that Wachwhere can very well fly and also fight threads, teleport and also communicate telepathically with their friends (Nuella can receive the thermal images of the animals).
  • Pellar: mute Ziehson from Meisterharfner Zist and probably the first explicit spy of the Harfnerhalle. Later he set up a branch.
  • Fiona: the youngest and only surviving daughter of Benim, lord of Fort. Actually, she is intended as the successor to Fort, but the golden talent disagrees and Benim sees that the dragon will decide. Most dragon riders come from the Weyr itself and prejudices and expectations await the daughter of a lord of the castle. A nebulous figure “kidnaps” you and Talenth into the past, where you have to explain and assert yourself in order to finally grow up to be the youngest Weyrherrin von Pern.
  • Xhinna: Orphan grew up in Fortweyr and burdened with some prejudices. She is obviously a lesbian and becomes the first rider of a blue dragon Tazith.
  • The Traders: In the south of the northern continent there seems to be another large caravan of traders at this time. The culture is adapted to the desert, many relatives (whose names usually end in -z) have “the face”, they can see into the future, the first vision is one's own death. Fiona has established a trading relationship with them in the past.

Seventh interval / sixth pass

(Moreta, dragon mistress of Pern, Nerilka's adventure and Beyond Between)

  • Moreta: originally from Keroon, rider from Orlith, Weyrherrin from Fort. Her story still forms the basis for “Moreta's Ritt” (1505 NL) in Lessa's time, although the facts are not (no longer) accurately reproduced. A new epidemic that affects people and runners (horses) is spreading furiously over Pern. Since time leaps during this time are exclusively carried out by bronze and gold dragons and Orlith has a clutch, Moreta declares herself ready to ride the queen of the retired old Weyrherrin, Holth. After the last serum delivery, she doesn't have a clear picture and puts herself and Holth in between. Orlith follows her after she has laid her eggs with Leri, the old Weyrherrin.

In Beyond Between it is described that Moreta is stuck in between, but is saved and brought to a controllable place. The first dragon riders who got lost in between stay there. But it can no longer step completely out of the in-between, it is perceived as a spirit.

  • Nerilka: daughter of the lord of Fort Tolocamp and his wife Pendra. Nerilka has many siblings, the people make fun of the "fort brood" and Nerilka is supposed to be married. However, she prefers to become a healer and flees the castle to Ruatha. Under the name of Rill, she provides valuable help and finally comforts the lord of the castle Alessan over the loss of Moreta.

Eighth interval (second major interval) / ninth pass

This is the time when most of the stories take place so far. Lessa arrives three years (2405) before the ninth and last passage of the red star (2408) in the Weyr (this is the content of the first novel "The World of Dragons").

  • Robinton: Robinton is the master harvester from Pern. Son of master harvester Petiron and master singer Merelan. Robinton is a musical genius and he and Merelan suffer deeply from Petiron's jealousy. Merelan nearly died when Robintons was born and never fully recovers, his father takes it very badly. Despite all difficulties, Robinton develops (under strict secrecy from Petiron) into a splendid harper. He can hear kites (not very common among non-riders) but, to his regret, is never chosen for a confrontation. Robinton avoids his father and goes hiking. He also finds his great love Kaisa. During their honeymoon on the boat, a storm overtakes them and Kasia, despite being rescued, does not recover from exhaustion and dies. Robinton is inconsolable and turns to his master studies and Silvina, the housekeeper of the Harpnerhalle. Silvina becomes pregnant and Camo is born. Camo is mentally retarded and it takes Robinton a while to realize that he is suffering more from the loss than his son.

He is elected master harvester of Pern and his father chooses exile (the semicircular bay) and Robinton has to turn to the task of warning Pern of a new thread fall and spreading knowledge even where the lords of the castle would rather have obedient workers.

He later took a leadership role in the Akki cause (see there)

  • Falloner / F'lon: Robinton's childhood friend, son of S'loner. He believes that even if the interval is too long, the threads will come back, which he learned from his father. When he becomes Weyrfüher, he unfortunately falls out with some of the lords of the castle in an attempt to avert them before the coming catastrophe. He has two sons, Fallarnon (F'lar) with Larna and after her death still Famanoran (F'nor) with Manora.
  • Manora: Overseer of the Lower Caves / Headwoman, so to speak, the headwoman of the Weyrvolks (residents of the Weyrs who have no connection to a dragon) but above all the kitchen.
  • Petiron: Robinton's father, when his son is elected master harvester, moves to the semicircular bay where he discovers Menolly. He is a very talented composer, only that his works can only be reproduced by exceptional talents (like Merelan). He has no patience with beginners and has been known for choleric outbursts in the Harpnerhalle.
  • Fax: a nephew of the Baron of the Highlands, who gradually snatches seven estates and castles under the nail through fraud, marriage and murder. Education is not tolerated in his domain, harpers are mistreated or even beaten to death, and he treats dragon riders even more contemptuously than other lords of the castle because he sees them as parasites and relics of a bygone era. Robinton has been his intimate enemy (and vice versa) since his youth. When the tradition of the search forces him to receive Dragon Rider on Ruatha, he dies at F'lar's hand. Gemma, an old relative of Lessa, gave birth to Jaxom, his son, on that day before she died.
  • F'lar: Rider of Mnementh, son of F'lon, Weyrherr von Benden and partner of Lessa. Always brought up to believe in the threads, F'lar is looking for a strong Weyrherrin for the last queen's egg on Pern. In Ruatha he finds what he is looking for, but a vague hunch never lets go of him. Despite being provoked by Fax, he inexplicably challenged Fax and wins. And he finds his weyr mistress Lessa. After he has prevailed against the competition and finally conquered Mnementh Ramoth, the two ensure from experience that the dragons always remain a task and that they can act as independently as possible.
  • Lessa: rider of Ramoth, former beneficiary of Ruatha. The whole story begins with Lessa. Her parents and older brothers are murdered. She hides in the watch watcher's hut (because she warned herself, see “The world of dragons”). Disguised as a servant and equipped with supernatural powers, she ensures that Ruatha never produces to Fax's satisfaction. When F'lar Fax kills she lays claim to her castle, but her lie turns out to be a stumbling block (see Jaxom). F'lar takes them with him despite the attempt to escape and prepares them for the confrontation (injuries, even fatalities seem to occur during this time, one of Lessa's competitors is fatally injured by Ramoth). She quickly gets used to the new situation, but soon doesn't want to accept that Ramoth (as the last remaining dragon queen) should stay in the cave and hatch eggs. She rediscovers the flamethrower, gives back her pride to a new generation of Weyrherrinen and, like F'lar, is interested in always getting the best out of the dragon riders. Lessa is very small and of a petite stature, nevertheless she is respected by everyone, not to say feared. Your “gift” for influencing is a constant source of unrest.
  • F'nor. Rider of Canth, son of F'lon and Manora. Partner of Brekke. He is certainly more flexible than his older brother and took the risk of jumping to the red star (which ended in devastation). Brekke brought him and Canth back in great fear of being completely alone after losing their queen.
  • Menolly: daughter of Yanus and Mavi, lords of the semicircular castle, later master harp. As a musical talent, Menolly does not fit into the tough everyday fishing life of the semicircular bay. She is the first one who has shaped fire lizards again in recent times and as a female harper apprentice she does not have it easy. Like Robinton, she has a great talent for catchy songs. She is married to Sebell and they have several children.
  • Sebell: Robinton's foster son (and distant relative) who Robinton pulls in as the next master harvester from Pern, which also works. Sebell is very similar to Robinton and also very talented musically.
  • Jaxom: son of Fax and Gemma, rider of Ruth. Jaxom grows in Ruatha on whose designated lord of the castle he is. Before Fax was killed by F'lar, the latter swore that if Gemma (who was in labor) gave birth to a living son, the castle should be his. Lessa, who worked as an obstetrician, claimed this son was alive (although he was not yet born and there was a great risk that mother and son would not survive the birth). F'lar took her at her word and took her to the Weyr and Lytol was appointed as the castle administrator until Jaxom was old enough. As a boy at a confrontation, he frees little white Ruth from his tough egg membrane when everyone else is already turning to the exits. Only because the tiny white dragon is expected to die, the lords of the castle do not organize a revolt, because this double occupation is impossible. But Ruth survives and comes up with surprising abilities and Jaxom conquers Sharra, Toric's sister. You have two boys.

Trivia (novels)

  • Shavva bint Faroud, the ancestor of Avril Bitra, who was also part of the Pern exploration team, was the first to prepare “Klah”. She discovered the bark and brewed it. She is also completely enthusiastic about Pern and would really like to stay. She brings a fist-sized ruby that lands at Avril. But Avril is definitely not coming to Shavva. She hates the planet Pern and its idealists. She loves coffee and she hates Klah.

The novels

The novels are listed in the order in which they were published, with a German title as well as an English original title and date of first publication.

  • The world of dragons ( Dragonflight , 1968)
After a long interval, most of the residents of Pern are sure that the "threads" will never come again, that the dragons and their riders have had their day and are only parasites. Even master harvester Robinton is struggling to find allies to prepare people for the next pass. Fax, who ruled seven castles through brutal methods, does not even allow harpers (and thus education) in his castles. But the traditional search for candidates for a confrontation can't even turn down faxing. Lessa is discovered by F'lar and brought to the Weyr and Fax is brought to its deserved end.
  • The Search of the Dragons ( Dragonquest , 1970)
The signs to move past are increasing, but many are still not convinced that dragon riders are even needed. There is only one Weyr (Benden) left, Ramoth is the only dragon queen on Pern, and R'gul (Weyrführer) doesn't want to "bother" the lords of the castle. Lessa has to fight for her position as Weyrherrin, and with Ramoth's first mating flight it is sealed: F'lar is the new Weyrführer. In order to finally receive the required taxes from the castles, the dragon riders kidnap the castle mistresses in order to receive their materials. The thread fall begins, and it soon becomes clear that one Weyr (of originally six) is not enough to protect all of Pern from the threads. Doom is imminent, and Lessa discovers in her first attempts to jump that dragons can also cross time. Using a tapestry as a template, she decides to jump to the end of the last pass to call on the dragon riders of the past to help.
  • Dragon Song ( Dragonsong , 1976)
Menolly loves music and would like to become a harpist. At this time, however, girls were extremely unusual as harpers, and Menolly also grew up in a conservative household. Her day-to-day work as the lord's daughter is long and boring. When Petiron dies, she loses her mentor and teacher, she is allowed to stand in for him until a replacement arrives from the Harpnerhalle (on the condition that no one finds out anything and she does not incorporate any of her own variations in teaching ballads). As it happens, her father catches her doing a little variation and from then on is no longer allowed to give lessons or compose. While gutting fish, she injured her wrist and sustained blood poisoning. Her mother Mavi purposely sutures the wound so that the wrist remains stiff. All reason enough to get out of the castle. Outside, she is surprised by the thread fall and finds protection in a fire lizard cave where the eggs are just jumping. Menolly binds nine lizards to himself (fire lizards are considered extinct or boyish dream at this time).
In the meantime, through Petiron's last letter, the Harpnerhalle got wind of Menolly's talent, and the semicircular bay is being feverishly searched for the poet of the wonderful variations, because Petiron "forgot" to tell the gender of the talent. Menolly finds his way to the Harpnerhalle via the Bendenweyr detour.
