The Rundfunk-Anstalt Südtirol (abbreviated RAS ; Italian Radiotelevisione Azienda Speciale , Ladin Radiotelevijion-Azienda per Südtirol ) is an institution in the Italian province of South Tyrol for the distribution of radio and television channels. The RAS does not produce its own content, but is only responsible for broadcasting foreign programs from the German and Alpine Romance cultural areas. The institute is financed with funds from the Province of South Tyrol.

history

After the RAI began broadcasting a television program in Italian on a regular basis in 1957, German- and Ladin-speaking South Tyroleans tried to receive and broadcast German television programs from abroad. This happened largely without agreement and often by means of converters and cable systems that were illegally built by private hands. Because of the monopoly of RAI in Italy at the time, many of these transmission systems were confiscated on behalf of the Ministry of Post and Communications. In 1962 the politics of the problem took on for the first time.

The Second Statute of Autonomy created the conditions for the regular broadcasting of foreign channels on Italian territory. In February 1974, the Province of South Tyrol took over 284 private systems and signed agreements with the broadcasters ORF , ZDF , SRG and ARD , which from then on gave their programs to South Tyrol free of charge. After frequency assignments, the RAS was founded on March 5, 1975 by provincial law as the public broadcasting service of the province of South Tyrol.

From 1975 to 1980 the first provisional transmitter network was set up, which was expanded from 1981 to 1994 with the construction of a third network for ORF 2, the construction of radio links and the amplification of the transmission power. A pilot project for the introduction of DAB began in 1997 for radio . For television, RAS began in 2007 with the conversion to DVB-T , which was completed in November 2009.

Since May 2010, the RAS has been distributing the programs ORF 1 HD , ORF 2 HD and ZDF HD in HDTV using the MPEG-4 codec . In addition, ARTE , 3sat and the Italian-language transmitter RSI LA 1 can be received via the 4th Mux . In November 2012, the ORF III channel and the HD offshoots of SRF 1 , SRF Zwei and Das Erste were included in the program offer.

On January 31, 2017, the RAS also switched the last digital radio programs to the new DAB + standard. This ended the parallel operation of DAB and DAB +, which had been ongoing since 2008. With the increasing spread of digital radio, DAB + will gradually replace the old VHF transmitters; at the end of 2017, the first smaller systems were switched off.

RAS currently has 26 employees and operates nationwide VHF , DAB digital radio and digital television networks with 133 stations in South Tyrol.
