MDR Life was one of the seven radio programs of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk that the newly founded state broadcaster broadcast between the start of broadcasting and December 31, 1999. The program was produced in what was then MDR Funkhaus Springerstraße in Leipzig. With the move of the cross-border MDR radio programs on January 1, 2000, the successor wave under the name "Jump FM" (today: MDR Jump ) began broadcasting from the central German radio station in Halle (Saale) . MDR Life was the last program that still broadcast from the old premises.

General information

Know everything, hear everything, everything MDR Life - under this motto, MDR Life broadcast for the broadcasting area of the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The initial program included a wide variety of programs, such as the "MDR Life Breakfast Show" on weekdays. It offered important daily news and headlines every 20 minutes in the “MDR-Life-Report”. In the program “MDR-Life-Feierabendshow” with the “MDR-Life-Three-Country-Report”, the topics were found which created the regional and local reference to the listeners. Advice topics also dominated the morning with the program “MDR Life am”. At lunchtime, “MDR Life Pop” offered fresh sound and information about stars, trends and hit movies, as well as offers from the MDR Life Club and the “PC emergency doctor” for quick help with computer problems. From midnight, the focus in “MDR-Life-Nachtfalter” was on music and telephone audience participation. On Sunday afternoons there were the “MDR Life Hits of the Week”. Oldies from the 60s, house and techno music were also part of the program.

Program reforms

As part of the development of the radio wave MDR Life, a large number of program optimizations and reforms took place. So there was the first big change at the station in 1996. In addition to the changed broadcasting scheme, the music color was renewed here in particular. The station's slogan has also been modified. So "MDR Life - the music radio" was now called "MDR Life - the service radio". The reason for these first changes was the fact that the daily range of the station fell by 200,000 listeners according to media analysis in 1996. A good year later, on November 3, 1997, another changed program went on air. The listeners were kept informed of the latest news from politics, business and entertainment for one hour at 12:00 and 18:00. So-called MDR-Life reporters reported from the broadcasting area, correspondents for MDR and ARD from Germany and the rest of the world. There was also a new music program in the “recurrent-based AC format”, which is geared towards the tastes of the 23 to 39-year-old listener. The purpose of this change was to improve information and entertainment skills. For the informative claim, the sender logo was given the nickname "MDR Life - Radio in the Middle", which was introduced in 1999.

Receptibility and sound image

The MDR beamed MDR Life program in Saxony , Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt on the earlier of the Berlin Radio used VHF -Senderkette terrestrial from. In addition, MDR Life could be received across Europe using the ADR method via the Astra satellite system (19.2 ° East). MDR Life was also receivable in the program bouquet of the digital program offer of ARD, ARD Digital . The program was also distributed in various cable networks. MDR Life was particularly noticeable due to the unmistakable sound. In addition to the more powerful, "massive" hearing effect already known from private radio programs in western Germany through audio compression, a very strong stereo effect was added to the audio signal, which was an acoustic trademark and promoted the recognition effect. Anyone who listened to the station while out in the car and had to switch to another MDR Life frequency found the station again within a very short time thanks to the distinctive sound. Shortly before the successor station Jump FM went on air, you could see how the stereo effect and audio compression were slowly turned away. The sound has not been that special since then.

Slogans

During its eight-year existence, the station used and developed various claims.

  • The service radio
  • Your favorite radio
  • Three countries, one broadcaster
  • A strong piece from the east
  • MDR Life - Radio right in the middle

Program setting

Due to the steadily decreasing number of listeners in the broadcasting area, which the corresponding media analyzes have repeatedly proven, the channel was discontinued on December 31, 1999. The last track played was The Final Countdown von Europe . As a follow-up program, Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk produces the Jump FM program, which took over the frequencies from MDR Life on January 1, 2000 and is still broadcasting today under the name MDR Jump .
