Shazad Latif (born July 15, 1988 in London ) is a British actor of Pakistani-Scottish descent.

life and career

Shazad Latif was born in the British capital, London. His ancestors come from Scotland and Pakistan . Latif grew up in Tufnell Park , North London . He studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School . During his student days he was on stage for theater productions such as King Lear or The School for Scandal . A year after Latif took on a role on the British television series Spooks, he left the Bristol Old Vic.

Latif has been active in film and television since 2009. For two years he played the role of tech-savvy Tariq Masood in the series Spooks - In the sights of MI5 . This was followed by guest appearances in Fresh Meat , Black Mirror or Silk - robes made of silk , before he returned as Dr. Nick Kassar starred in My Mad Fat Diary .

From 2012 to 2015 Latif appeared in all three seasons of the British comedy series "Toast of London". Even if he only had a supporting role, his character Clem Fandango became a cult in the UK, as he delivered the same dialogue with the main character Steven Toast (Matt Berry) in every episode as a running gag .

His film appearances include Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2 , We Are Monster or The Poetry of Infinite . After his engagement at Spooks , he again took on a leading role as Clem Fandango in the series Toast of London from 2012 to 2015 . In 2016, a recurring role as Dr. Jekyll in Penny Dreadful .

Since 2017, Latif has been in the science fiction series Star Trek: Discovery as Lt. Ash Tyler in a leading role. He also played the Klingon Voq , but this was only known in the 11th episode. In order to keep this secret until then, the pseudonym Javid Iqbal , which Latif had chosen in honor of his late father , was shown in the credits .

In 2018 he took on a supporting role in The Commuter . Recurring roles in the series Departure and The Dark Crystal: Era of Resistance followed in 2019 .

Latif has lived in Camden, London, since 2017 .
