As Camden Market is a collection of various markets in and around which is Camden High Street , London Borough of Camden Town called. They form one of the most famous and largest markets in the city and are visited by around 500,000 people every week.
The market consists of six neighboring market areas:
- Camden Lock Market , founded in 1974, a new covered market opened in 1991.
- Stables Market in the north of the area. It has the largest area of all sub-areas; mainly clothing and furniture are offered. Local residents and Londoners protested in 2007 against the renovation of the market and the establishment of large fashion chains.
- Camden Canal Market in the northeast of the area, right on Regent's Canal . The market was devastated by fire on February 9, 2008. The pub "The Hawley Arms" , which is popular with celebrities, was also badly damaged.
- Buck Street Market to the south, near Camden Town tube station
- Electric Ballroom on the premises of an old club from the 1930s; on weekends it serves as a club and two days a week as a market. In the Electric Ballroom played rock bands and musicians such as Madness , Iggy Pop , U2 or Sid Vicious .
- Inverness Street in a side street off Camden High Street in the southwest of the area, where numerous pubs and bars are located.
Several media companies are located in the immediate vicinity of the markets. So have there among other things MTV , the news agency AP , and the German channel RTL at Camden market their studios. The devastating fire in February 2008 was not the first of its kind. In October 1980 parts of the market fell victim to a fire.
In May 2009, over a year after the devastating fire, Camden Market reopened its doors with over one hundred new stores under the new name Camden Lock Village .
On July 10, 2017, shortly after midnight, a fire broke out in Camden Lock Market. Over 70 firefighters were on duty and were able to bring the fire under control after around three hours in the early hours of the morning.
