action

In the winter of 1946, a group of German prisoners is to be transferred to a Soviet prison camp in Leningrad , which is administered by women. The commander-in-chief of this camp is Colonel Pavlov. The Soviet soldiers lost families and friends as a result of the German siege, and the soldiers' attitude towards the prisoners is also corresponding. Only the doctor Natalia and the young cook are friendly, if aloof.

Natalia has to make a deal with Colonel Pavlov to protect her wounded husband Andrei from deportation to Siberia. The deal is supposed to hand over SS war criminals among the Germans to the colonel , who he can have executed in front of the Soviet people. Natalia is attracted to the soldier Max and would like to protect him from the Colonel's attack. Klaus, on the other hand, tries to denounce his comrades in order to protect his life.

Natalia organized an orchestra with the Jewish businessman Yakov in which the German soldiers play. At a ball there is rapprochement between the women and the German prisoners. They spend the night together. Natalia gets involved with Max, who is attacked by Klaus on the way back to the barracks. Natalia then reveals the true identity of Klaus.
