action
In 1971 Ed and Lorraine Warren are investigating the Annabelle case and decide to keep the doll in their museum for safety as it is a magnet for evil spirits. In the Warren's house, Annabelle is blessed by Father Gordon and then placed in a glass cabinet so that evil no longer has control over the doll.
A year later, the Warrens hire babysitter Mary Ellen for their daughter Judy because they won't be back until the next day, Judy's birthday. As a result, Mary Ellen brings shy Judy to school in the morning. There, the girl is bullied because of a newspaper article about her parents and is described as possessed by classmate Anthony Rios. To cheer her up, Mary Ellen later decides to celebrate Judy's birthday, to which none of her classmates wanted to come. In the afternoon Daniela Rios, Mary Ellen's best friend, also appears at Judy's house. When the latter tries out her new roller skates on the street, Daniela sneaks down to the artifact room, steals the key from the Warren's office and thus gains entry to the Warren Occult Museum. There she asks for a presence so that she can speak to her father again, who was killed in a car accident for which she blames herself. When the Annabelle doll suddenly moves, Daniela opens the locked display case and forgets to lock it again when she leaves. In this way, the entity succeeds in bringing the other objects in the room to life. First, Judy meets the "bride", a figure who makes the wearers of her dress violent and incites them to kill. With the help of a crucifix , Judy finally manages to keep the bride away from her. A little later, she reveals to Mary Ellen that she has the same gift as her mother and that she can see ghosts, such as the late priest Michael Morrissey .
In the evening, the three of them are visited by Bob, an employee of the local supermarket who has romantic feelings for Mary Ellen. However, unnoticed by the three girls, he is attacked by a werewolf and has to hide in the chicken coop in the garden. Shortly afterwards, Daniela pretends to have to go home, but sneaks into the artifact room one more time to make another attempt to speak to her father. In fact, the dead appears to her, but the evil spirit threatens her and locks her in the cellar of the house. Meanwhile, Mary Ellen has put Judy to bed and is surprised to find that the Annabelle doll is lying next to her, but thinks nothing further. But shortly afterwards she is attacked by the “ferryman”, a creature that snatches your soul if you don't pay for it. In dire straits, Mary Ellen manages to free herself, but finds out that young Judy has also been haunted. The two of them try to call Lorraine by phone, but only talk to the Annabelle demon who demands a soul. After they can free Daniela from the cellar and identify them as the cause of the whole situation, the bride is attacked again. Mary Ellen collapsed and needs her asthma - inhaler out of the car to obtain the Judy. Outside she is followed by the werewolf, but with the help of Bob she can escape into the house. There the bride has already taken control of Daniela. Judy and the fit again, Mary Ellen, decide to put the Annabelle doll back in the glass case to put an end to the haunted house. The two are shown the way to the doll via the ghost of the late Michael Morrissey. Mary Ellen manages to get close to her and shortly thereafter also separates Daniele from the bride with the help of a recording of Ed. Together they fight their way to the artifact room, where they have to face the bride, the ferryman, the Annabelle demon and the ghost of Daniela's father. Eventually they can lock Annabelle up again and thus take power away from evil.
The next day, Lorraine brings Daniela a message from the real spirit of her father who does not blame her for his death. Later, Daniela also speaks to her brother Anthony, whereupon many classmates come to Judy's birthday party.
production
In late April 2018, Warner Bros. announced that a third Annabelle film would hit theaters in July 2019. At the same time it was announced that Gary Dauberman , who had previously written both predecessors and The Nun , is again responsible for the script and is also directing. Together with James Wan , who had the idea to put the Warrens at the center of the film, he developed the rough framework and determined the starting point of the film. The third part, for example, uses the scenes from Conjuring , in which the Warrens lock the Annabelle doll in their house, and has a plot period of two days. The engagement of Michael Burgess as a cameraman was a personal concern for Dauberman, because Burgess himself felt like a little director and thus ideas and recordings were staged even better. Regarding the tonality, Dauberman said that he had tried to bring in more humor and lightness than in the two predecessors in order to create even more contrast to the horror moments. The latter are a mixture of practical and digital effects. Objects actually on set would have made it easier for the actors to convey emotions such as fear even more realistically. For this, the production designer Jennifer Spence used the artifact room from previous films as a basis and added another part of the room, in which, according to her, there is a lot of action. In addition, she added many small details to the sets that were not used in Annabelle 3 , but could be used in later films. For example, she built a trap door in the stairwell or a hidden staircase behind the fireplace. The costume designer Leah Butler got inspiration from the costume rental company Western Costume , based on whose historical templates she created the first drafts, which she then adapted to the character of each individual figure together with Dauberman.
The focus of the plot is the young Judy Warren , who was cast with Mckenna Grace , who is a big fan of horror films herself. She received a fee of 750,000 US dollars, around 660,000 euros, for her work in the film, with additional bonus payments from the box office, the marketing of the soundtrack and merchandising included in her contract. Also, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are again as Ed and Lorraine Warren to see. For this reason, the film feels very much like a conjuring film, according to producer James Wan . According to Dauberman, both had great ideas and supported the entire production team with their experience and chemistry. In early October 2018 it was announced that Madison Iseman is part of the film and embodies the babysitter Mary Ellen , who is very close to the family and is like a sister to Judy . Furthermore, even Katie Sarife seen in a lead role. She embodies the fun-loving Daniela , the best friend of Mary Ellen , who deals with the afterlife since her father has passed away. In preparation for the filming, a priest gave his blessing to the three main actors Iseman, Sarife and Grace. The latter even received a rosary blessed by Pope Francis . In addition, Samara Lee appears again as Annabelle Mullins after Annabelle 2 . (In the finished film "The Bride" monster is ultimately Engl. "The Bride") was introduced. This seduces brides to buy their dress, then tries to take control of them and ultimately forces them to kill their grooms.
Filming began in Los Angeles in late October , took place in Burbank in mid-November and ended in mid-December 2018. In March 2019, the official title Annabelle Comes Home was unveiled.
A first picture of the Annabelle doll in the Warrens Museum was released on March 25, 2019; the trailer followed six days later. A second trailer was released on May 28, 2019. The world premiere took place on June 20, 2019 in Los Angeles . The film was originally scheduled to release in US cinemas on July 3, 2019. The start date was later brought forward by one week to June 26, 2019. In Germany, the film was shown in cinemas from July 4, 2019. In the finished film, a replica of the real Annabelle doll can be seen during a game show on television.
The film has been available digitally in the United States since September 17 and on DVD and Blu-ray since October 8, 2019 . In Germany, Annabelle 3 was released digitally on November 7th and on Blu-ray on November 21st, 2019.

reception
Age rating
In the United States, the film received an R rating from the MPAA . In Germany, he received a “release from 16 years”. The reasoning states that the film has an increasingly threatening atmosphere and works with classic horror film stylistic devices such as moments of shock, eerie noises and shock effects. However, these are within a framework that does not overwhelm young people from the age of 16. Viewers of this age would also recognize the film as a unreal horror story and be able to maintain a corresponding emotional distance.
Reviews
The first reviews were mostly positive. Above all, the acting, the clever and scary creatures, the humor and the intelligent script were praised and the film was described as the best of the Annabelle trilogy.
So far the film has convinced 65% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 53 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .
The film critic Antje Wessels assesses Annabelle 3 as largely positive and calls it a “very solid spin-off”. The basic idea is nothing new, but it still works well because the main characters are personable and for the first time a more critical external representation of the Warrens is available. In the first hour, the evil slowly and comprehensibly makes its way into the house, where director and screenwriter Gary Dauberman works cleverly by dividing the story evenly between all three main characters so that as a group they would only come to the threat late. In the final third, the film then noticeably ran out of breath, as there was a lack of plausibility and in the interchangeable finale one bet on one jump scare after the other. Typically for the genre, these are either suddenly appearing characters or suddenly loud sounds and are also supported by the fact that the main characters have separated from each other. Wessels, on the other hand, praises the functional music by Joseph Bishara as well as the camera work by Michael Burgess , which used little light, but at the same time staged the winding house well and thus created a good atmosphere. The film critic concludes that the film is best when it focuses on the characters.
For Carsten Baumgardt von Filmstarts, however , Annabelle 3 disappoints insofar as it does not really build bridges to the rest of the Conjuring universe and is also too clichéd a horror film. The film begins well with the scenes around Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga , but both are only part of the cast for PR purposes, to create a connection to the rest of the universe. Afterwards, the film is slowed down by the introduction of the actual main characters, who have a coherent chemistry, and it takes a while to get going again. The initially intelligently drawn characters would unfortunately behave rather stupidly later, making Annabelle 3 a predictable, genre-typical and clichéd film with jump-scare elements, which is only represented by humor and lightness, especially that of Michael Cimino embodied Bob Palmeri , different from other genre representatives. The plot is also far too arbitrary, only the 70-year style is visually convincing. Baumgardt positively notes that the superficial themes “loss” and “outsider” would enable the viewer to establish an emotional bond with the film. In addition, shortly before the end, Dauberman succeeded in creating an eerie, creepy and dark atmosphere through innovations. However, for incomprehensible reasons, this is discarded in the finale, which also does not bring all the storylines to a conclusion.
Arthur A. from Filmfutter.com makes a similar assessment , for whom Annabelle 3 falls far below his potential. The "teenage horror" does not develop a real scary atmosphere, but rather relies on fun, jump scares and an overused fog machine , which does not create tension, as the viewer does not have the feeling that the main characters are in serious danger. Mckenna Grace plays her character multi-faceted and believable, but Mary Ellen and Daniela Rios are less mature, too one-dimensional and would only advance the plot through stupid decisions. Unfortunately, the latter focuses too much on the main characters and only gets going in the entertaining last half hour, so that the film has little ghostly. At the same time, it could serve as a stepping stone for future spin-offs via the diverse demons and ghosts introduced in the film, some of which are silly, others creative, but none of which are really creepy. Overall, Arthur A. describes the film as more entertaining than Annabelle , but worse than Annabelle 2 . He praises the performances of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who are approachable and personable without large gestures, but with a subtle game and warm and family chemistry, which is why one can look forward to Conjuring 3 .
IGN's Juliet Bennett Rylah believes that familiar elements would result in a fun, refreshing, and heartwarming movie that feels like the perfect ending to the Annabelle trilogy. While Annabelle and Annabelle 2 are gloomy, complicated and the motives of the horror doll are unclear, Annabelle 3 has well-made shock moments paired with tension-breaking ease. He takes on the classic "teenage babysitter story", increases the stakes with cursed objects and logically explains all decisions of the protagonists. The film begins a little too slowly, but once it starts there are very creative and beautiful moments of shock. Countless entities would enable each figure to have their own personal moment to shine. Overall, Annabelle 3 is not trying to outbid the franchise hit Conjuring - The Visitation , but rather to create something different, lighter and more scary with fresh monsters.
Gross profit
By previews in the United States, the film was 3.5 million US dollars import. On the North American opening day, the film was able to generate a total of 7.2 million US dollars. In total, Annabelle 3 grossed $ 31.2 million in North America and $ 76.2 million worldwide on the first weekend. In Germany, 125,000 cinema-goers watched the film at the same time, which enabled it to reach third place on the cinema charts. A week later, Annabelle 3 was able to gross in US cinemas 5.6 million US dollars, while in Germany it was able to turn over around 960,000 euros with 110,000 moviegoers. The worldwide income from cinema screenings amounts to 231.25 million US dollars, of which he was able to gross 74.15 million in the North American area alone. In Germany, the film had 553,667 admissions.
continuation
In an interview, Gary Dauberman said that there are still many stories to tell about Annabelle and that the series was never designed as a closed trilogy, but that each film is a new individual entry. He revealed that there were already initial ideas for spin-offs with the bride and the samurai suit, for which he had already developed original stories.
