action

In 1943, devout doll maker Samuel Mullins and his wife Esther mourn the loss of their seven-year-old daughter Annabelle, whom they affectionately called "Bee". She was hit by a passing car when the Mullins' car broke down and died. Later, an unknown entity makes itself felt in the Mullins' house, and the couple believe this is the ghost of their late daughter. This convinces her to transfer her being into a porcelain doll made by Samuel so that she can be with her again. However, they soon realize that they have fallen victim to a demon in search of a human host and lock the doll in Bee's former bedroom in her closet, which is pasted with pages from a Bible. A priest should also bless both the Mullins' room and home.

Twelve years later, in 1955, the Mullins invite the nun, Sister Charlotte, and six orphaned girls, who have become homeless after the closure of their Catholic orphanage , to their home. On the very first night, Janice, one of the orphan girls suffering from polio , wakes up and sneaks into Bee's actually locked bedroom, which is strangely unlocked. In it she finds the key to Bee's wardrobe and opens it. In doing so, she unwittingly frees the demon in the doll from its captivity. From then on he begins to terrorize the girls and the other residents of the house and shows particular interest in Janice.

On the second evening, the demon continues to chase Janice, who tries to escape using a stairlift , but is seriously injured when she is captured by the demon and pushed from the second floor to the first. She injured herself so badly that she is now dependent on a wheelchair. The next day Janice is dragged into the shed and the demon in the form of Bee now takes possession of her. One of the other orphans, Janice's best friend Linda, notices changes in her behavior and admits to Samuel that Janice went to Bee's room two nights ago and found a doll in a white dress.

Meanwhile, Sister Charlotte seeks out Esther, who has barricaded herself in her bedroom and hid the left side of her face behind a mask after her left eye was torn out by the demon during their first encounter twelve years earlier. Esther confesses to the nun the truth that is hidden behind the doll and what the haunted house is all about. Sister Charlotte becomes increasingly concerned that the demon could do something bad to the girls.

After the Mullins' are killed by the demon, this sister attacks Charlotte as she tries to evacuate the girls from the house. The possessed Janice, who can now walk again, then pursues her friend Linda, who is hiding in Bees' room out of fear, but finds her in the bedroom closet with the doll and tries to kill her with a knife. Sister Charlotte arrives to stop Janice and locks the girl with the doll in the closet. The next day the police came to search the house and its surroundings, but found only the doll in the bedroom closet, which they took with them as evidence. Janice, however, escaped through a hole in the wall behind the closet and went to an orphanage in Santa Monica . She has given herself the name "Annabelle" and is adopted by the Higgins family.

In 1970 Janice "Annabelle" Higgins joined a satanic cult with her boyfriend. One night they murder their adoptive parents in their bedroom, attracting the attention of neighbors, Mia and John Form.

In a post-credit scene set in Romania in 1952 , the demon nun Valak ( Conjuring 2 ) can be seen lingering in the candle-lit halls of the Câr Ca monastery .

Development and history of origin

In October 2015 it was confirmed that a sequel is in preparation for the financially successful Annabelle film. In March 2016 it was announced that the Swedish Lights-Out director David F. Sandberg had been hired to direct the film, replacing John R. Leonetti , director of the first film. It was also confirmed that the screenwriter Gary Dauberman, previously responsible for the script for the first Annabelle film, also wrote the screenplay for the sequel and that Peter Safran and James Wan again acted as producers. In November 2016 it became known that the film composer Benjamin Wallfisch is working again with Sandberg and composing the film score for Annabelle 2 .

In late March 2017, director Sandberg and Warner Bros. announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that Annabelle 2 was a prequel to the first film and the official new title for release in the United States is now Annabelle: Creation .

As director Sandberg is a big fan of older horror movies with their unusual tracking shots and filming, he settled for Creation of classics such as The Haunting (The Haunting) inspired. What he was particularly interested in staging Annabelle 2 was that today's horror films have grown up and matured and place more value on suspense than just relying on “ torture porn madness” to scare or shock the audience. First and foremost, according to Sandberg , Annabelle: Creation should not be a simple continuation or repetition of the original, but rather tell an independent story with the origin of the Annabelle doll, which does not bring back any known main characters from the first film. In addition, the film music for Creation is very much inspired by the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining , especially by the works of the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki . Another intention of the filmmakers was to try to make the film as intense and scary as possible so that, according to director Sandberg, it might be too hard for some viewers to watch. Nevertheless, quiet moments should also flow into the film in order to keep the balance between the narrative parts of the story and the common genre elements.

Casting and filming

In June 2016, Miranda Otto , Talitha Bateman and Stephanie Sigman were confirmed to star in the film. It later became known that other actors , including Anthony LaPaglia , Lulu Wilson , Philippa Coulthard and Grace Fulton Samara Lee, Lou Lou Safran and Tayler Buck, had been hired for the film.

Young actress Talitha Bateman was already shortlisted for the role of Janet Hodgson at James Wan's casting for Conjuring 2 , but the decision ultimately went in favor of Madison Wolfe . Her brother Gabriel Bateman was also seen in Annabelle and Lights Out . Nevertheless, a lengthy casting phase was carried out to find the right girls for the roles of the orphans. Talitha Bateman also had to audition for Sandberg several times to prove that she was up to the role of Janice and was ultimately hired. Lulu Wilson auditioned for the role of the youngest of the orphans, Linda , because she wanted to play a film character who is an alternative to her role as Doris Zander in Ouija: Origin of Evil . Creation is also her third horror film, having starred in 2014's Deliver Us From Evil and 2016's Origin Of Evil . Working with the child actors was the greatest challenge for the production team around director Sandberg, because there were time restrictions on working hours, people were not allowed to work after midnight and overtime could not be done.

The shooting with a budget of 15 million US dollar began on June 27, 2016 in Los Angeles , California on the Warner Bros. Studios and was completed on 15 August 2016th

Film music

The music for the film was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch , who previously wrote the music for Sandberg's Lights Out , replacing Joseph Bishara, the composer of the first Annabelle film and the Conjuring films. The soundtrack album was on August 4, 2017 the to Time Warner belonging Label Water Tower Music published.

Stephanie Sigman and David F. Sandberg talk about Annabelle 2 (2017)

On September 15, 2016, the first official teaser for Annabelle 2 was presented. On March 31, another short teaser about the making of the Annabelle doll, subtitled Creation, announced the official trailer for the film, which Warner Bros. unveiled at WonderCon 2017 in Anaheim , California on April 1, 2017 .

Annabelle: Creation premiered on June 19, 2017 at the Los Angeles Film Festival , where Warner Bros. unveiled a second official trailer and the final movie poster . In addition, the film was presented in July 2017 at the annual Comic-Con in San Diego and shown during an exclusive " screening ".

At the end of July 2017, Warner Bros. also published the film clips Toy Gun and Ghost on YouTube with original scenes from Annabelle: Creation as well as Bee's Room, a 360-degree virtual reality trailer with paranormal events in the former children's room of the late Mullins' daughter, where the Annabelle doll was trapped with the demon.

The film was originally scheduled to be released on May 19, 2017 in the United States and other parts of the world during the same period. However, the release date was then postponed by Warner Bros. to August 2017 in December 2016 in order not to compete with Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant , whose launch date was set for May 2017 by 20th Century Fox .

reception

The reviews of Annabelle 2 are partly negative and mixed to positive. Some reviewers criticize the initially too slow staging, a weak script as well as clichéd characters and too many jump scares . The eerie atmosphere, the sound design and the camera work, which is reminiscent of old school horror films , were positively highlighted . The acting performances of the young actors were also praised, above all those of Bateman and Wilson, whose friendly relationship is credible. Overall it was concluded that the film is qualitatively better than its predecessor.

The Rotten Tomatoes website determined a rating of 70% based on 116 positive and 49 critical reviews, with an average rating of 6.2 out of 10 and a user rating of 68%, with an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 possible points. The critics' consensus on the site states: " Annabelle: Creation adds another powerful chapter to the conjuring franchise - and offers renewed evidence that crazy-looking dolls remain truly scary." The Metacritic website calculated an average metascore of 62 with 100 possible points, based on 29 reviews from renowned media and a user rating of 6.7 with 10 possible points. (As of October 2018)

Reviews

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de awards 3.5 out of 5 stars and praises the fact that director Sandberg knows how to convince “above all with an exquisite staging, creative shocks and engaging characters that are more than mere demon food”. Furthermore, he sums up that the friendship between the orphans Janice and Linda as well as the fate of Samuel Mullins, who struggles for absolution for the accidental death of his daughter, would ensure that the audience cheered with the characters. Ultimately, he draws the conclusion:

"Heavily staged puppet horror with creative scary scenes, in which only the drawn-out finale is a bit disappointing - all in all, another successful contribution to the constantly expanding 'Conjuring' cinema universe."

Arthur A. awards 3.5 out of 5 stars at Filmfutter.com and draws the conclusion:

“Annabelle 2 is a contribution to the Conjuring franchise that is worth seeing for horror fans, which successfully lets you forget the bitter aftertaste of its failed predecessor through old-fashioned horror and two great young leading actresses. However, even director David F. Sandberg cannot avoid all of his mistakes and reach the class of James Wan films. "

- Filmfutter.com

Oliver Armknecht from Film-Rezensions.de awards 6 out of 10 points and draws the conclusion:

“With 'Annabelle 2', it's time to take a deep breath and hold your breath at the same time: the prequel to the horror hit has been significantly improved thanks to the return to old strengths. A lot has changed, especially visually, the film spoils with beautiful shots and an atmospheric, winding farmhouse. As always, nothing is original here, every risk has been avoided as far as possible. The horror clichés are implemented competently, especially since the characters are personable and the doll itself is as usual hideous. "

- Film-Rezensions.de

Christopher Diekhaus draws the conclusion at Kino-Zeit.de:

"Annabelle 2 easily surpasses the uninspired first film, but turns out to be an unnecessarily ambiguous matter, since at a certain point - as in many modern horror works - loud, superficial terror overlays the horror that is slowly creeping into the bones."

The budget of 15 million US dollars is set against worldwide box office revenues of around 306.5 million US dollars since the film was released.

continuation

In April 2018, Warner Bros. announced that New Line Cinema was working on a sequel to the Annabelle films, which will premiere in July 2019. As a director, screenwriter Gary Dauberman was hired, who will make his directorial debut with the film. James Wan and Peter Safran will once again produce the film project together through their production companies Atomic Monster and The Safran Company . In July 2018, Wan and Dauberman also officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con that the plot of the third Annabelle film would be set shortly before the events in The Conjuring , when the doll was brought to their occult museum by the Warrens and is locked in a showcase and then haunted her then ten-year-old daughter Judy . Furthermore, at the end of September 2018 it was announced that the young actress Mckenna Grace had been hired for the lead role of Judy Warren . Annabelle 3 was released in 2019.
