action

The film begins in 2010 with a gun battle in the Iraqi province of Diyala . Three soldiers discover an underground cave. When the light of their lamps goes out and their helmet camera shows a black image, you can hear screams.

In 2013, police officer Ralph Sarchie and his partner Butler investigate a number of crimes. A dead baby is found in an alley. Then they drive to a domestic violence incident . The man, Jimmy, is said to have beaten his wife and is fleeing when the police arrive. Sarchie and Butler arrest Jimmy. At the zoo, a woman, Jane, threw her baby into the lion enclosure, where the animals were fortunately locked away for painting. Sarchie wants to speak to the painter and goes into the enclosure. The painter is gone, but two lions appear. Sarchie can barely save himself. Jane is taken to a mental institution and accompanied by the priest Mendoza at her family's request.

Sarchie and Butler drive to a house that residents say they are "owned". A ghost has lived in the basement since painting work was carried out there. Sarchie finds a painter's body, Griggs. In his apartment they discover photos that also show Jane and that he was in the military with Jimmy and a certain Santino. Sarchie returns to Jimmy's apartment one more time and finds the videos from the helmet camera in Iraq. The scene from the beginning of the film shows a swarm of bats, then some characters on a wall. Santino stands stoically in front of this wall and looks at the signs. Sarchie discovers that these characters were also painted on Jimmy's apartment, in the possessed house, and in the lion enclosure, and were painted over by Santino and Griggs. The characters were written in Santino's blood and eventually lead the policemen to his apartment.

As the investigation continues, Sarchie teams up with the unconventional Mendoza, who is well versed in exorcism , to shed light on the darkness. According to his own statement, the priest knows the “true evil”, which is inexplicable for “human standards”, it is a “gate” through which evil can enter the earthly world. After initial skepticism, Sarchie lets himself in with the priest. They ambush Santino in front of his apartment, but he can outsmart them. Sarchie and Mendoza arrest Jimmy, who is also there. Santino can overpower Butler and kills him. Meanwhile, Jane escapes from the asylum and falls to her death.

Sarchie's daughter and wife are kidnapped by Santino. He faces Sarchie, but does not reveal the whereabouts of the two. Santino is possessed by a demon. With Sarchie's help, Mendoza carries out a major exorcism. When the demon is cast out, Santino reveals the whereabouts of Sarchie's daughter and wife, who can be saved.

Jörg Gerle from film-dienst spoke of an "impressive horror film that appears like a crime drama for a long time, but then develops into an exorcism thriller". Although the "question of the origin and function of absolutely evil is only touched on superficially", the "intense horror experience with goosebumps and lingering fear of the demons in the basement" promotes the film "into the top division of the genre". Ed Gonzalez of Slant Magazine wrote, however, that the film provided "little more than a series of seemingly arbitrary, often creepy shocks designed solely to serve the audience."
