action
In Mexico in 1673, a woman named Llorona drowned her two children in order to punish her unfaithful husband and take away his greatest possession. But when she realizes what she has done, she is in deep grief and kills herself too. From then on, her mind wants to find other children to take the places of the dead.
In 1973, in Los Angeles, the family carer Anna Tate-Garcia was sent to Patricia Alvarez because her sons had not come to school. Patricia tells Anna that she can hear crying and wants to prevent Anna from freeing her trapped children Carlos and Tomas. When Patricia gets violent, she is overwhelmed by the police officer sent to protect Anna and her two sons are taken to a church institution. But that night both are haunted by Llorona and also drowned in the river. When Anna is contacted about the bodies, Patricia accuses her of being responsible for the death caused by “La Llorona”. Patricia, however, is taken away on suspicion of murder. At the same time, Anna's son Chris meets the crying Llorona not far from the crime scene, but at the last moment he breaks out of her clutches and flees into the car with his sister Sam.
The next day, Sam and her mother also meet Llorona, after Anna had previously asked Father Perez about the legend of the weeping woman. When there are multiple attacks in which Chris is injured, the family must seek medical attention. A doctor discovers the injuries caused by Llorona on Chris' body, which is why an investigation into Anna for abuse comes. As a result, Chris and Anna tell each other about their observations for the first time, while Llorona tries at the same time to drown Sam in the bathtub, which her mother can prevent in time. Anna was also able to find out the reason for the visitation: when Patricia, who was in prison, visited, she revealed that she had prayed to Llorona and had offered Anna's children in exchange for her own.
Anna then goes back to Father Perez, who refers her to the faith healer Rafael Olvera. After some hesitation, he agrees to help the family. So the four of them make arrangements for the night together and manage to exclude Llorona from the house by means of a closed circle of seeds from the flame tree . But when Sam tries to get her doll from the porch, she destroys this circle and enables Llorona to penetrate the house. When the latter tries to kill Sam in the pool, Rafael can only prevent the misfortune by consecrating the water. Together with Anna, he decides to lock the children, like Patricia once, in the closet until sunrise. But Patricia, who has meanwhile been released from prison for lack of evidence, secretly frees them both and breaks the sperm line again. So Llorona gains access to the house again, but in a final fight in the attic Anna is stabbed to death with a cross made from the wood of the flame tree.
production
Directed by Michael Chaves . The script was written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis . The film, produced by James Wan , is based on a Mexican folk tale that is spread throughout the Latin American region . It is about the spirit of a woman, from Llorona (Spanish for "The Weeping"), who has drowned her own children in a river and weeps over them. Their appearance is usually considered a harbinger of death. It is said to be found around rivers. The legend of the Llorona was also spread in the USA by the Mexican people in the southern part of the country.
The film premiered on March 15, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . The film was released in German cinemas on April 18, 2019. In September 2019, the film will be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Contemporary World Cinema section.
reception
Reviews
Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.
The film critic Antje Wessels writes that, as in The Nun , the main characters in Llorona's Curse, all of whom are solid actors, would very soon be literally in the dark in the truest sense of the word, and the makers prefer to concentrate on the quick shock. Instead of delving even more into the background story of the Llorona spirit, the director relies on the classic jumpscare setup, suddenly making eerie grimaces appear and suddenly turning up the music at the crucial moment. Wessels sums up that Llorona's curse has just been staged for a debut work with a solid hand and looks really good at times , but unfortunately director Michael Chaves relied too much on common horror film mechanisms in the second half and preferred the predictable jumpscare to telling an emotional story, too if the origin of the story had given it up easily.
Gross profit
On the opening weekend, the film made it to the top of the US cinema charts with gross revenues of around US $ 26.5 million . A week later it was still enough for third place with 7.5 million US dollars. The film's worldwide revenues from theatrical screenings amount to 123.1 million US dollars, of which it grossed 54.7 million in North America alone. In Germany, the film recorded 123,383 visitors.
