Nikolaus Leopold Joseph Maria zu Salm-Salm (* July 18, 1838 at Anholt Castle in Anholt , Westphalia , † February 16, 1908 there ) was a German zoologist and dendrologist and from 1886 to 1908 the sixth Prince of Salm-Salm . As a registrar of Anholt, he was hereditary member of the Prussian mansion from 1888 to 1908 , and also a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia .

Life

Leopold zu Salm-Salm was the eldest son of Prince Alfred Konstantin zu Salm-Salm and his wife, Princess Auguste Adelheid Emanuele Constanze von Croÿ (1815–1886), a daughter of Prince Ferdinand Victor Philippe von Croÿ (1791–1865).

Leopold was educated in science. As an ornithologist he watched the avifauna in his home, where the Lower Rhine lowland landscapes of the Lower Lower Rhine , the Westmünsterland and the Achterhoek touch. He recorded his observations from 1890 to 1908 and made a collection of bird skins and stuffed birds. He also collected shell molluscs , whose housings he combined in a considerable collection of conchylia . Because of their scientific importance, the prince's records and collections ended up in the Westphalian Provincial Museum for Natural History in Münster after his death ; the collection of shell molluscs, which suffered greatly in World War II, was not until 1963. The prince also showed interest in equestrian sports and horse breeding. He was first chairman of the "Horse Breeding Association of the Western Münsterland Bocholt eV" founded on July 19, 1896.

On July 12, 1893, Leopold zu Salm-Salm married Princess Eleonore Leopoldine Aloysia von Croÿ (born May 13, 1855 in Dülmen ; † May 27, 1903 in Berlin ) in Teplitz-Schönau , the daughter of Prince Alexis Wilhelm Zephyrinus Victor von Croÿ (1825–1898) and Princess Franziska Maria Johanna Carolina Aloysia (1833–1908), a born princess of Salm-Salm. The honeymoon led to Switzerland , where the prince developed the idea of equipping the Leopoldspark , which he had designed and opened in 1892, with a Swiss-style chalet as a staffage . In 1900 he had the park expanded.

As the legacy of the Bergregal about the mineral resources of the former Principality of Salm , which went back to the provisions of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 and the compensation of imperial princes " depossed " on the left bank of the Rhine , Leopold zu Salm-Salm concluded with the International Drilling Company , the predecessor of the Trier Mining Company , and the bank stone in 1898 a contract for the drilling rights north of the lip . In honor of the prince, the coal mining company "Union of Prince Leopold" , founded in 1906, and the mine of Prince Leopold and its shafts, "Leopold I-III" were named. A follow-up contract concluded on August 17, 1916 with the Trier mining company provided for the Salm-Salm dynasty to receive income from the mining tithes until 1930.

When Leopold zu Salm-Salm died childless at the age of 69, his younger brother Alfred zu Salm-Salm succeeded him as the seventh Prince zu Salm-Salm.
