action

In 1952, two nuns in the Romanian monastery of St. Carta near the Transylvanian community of Biertan are threatened and attacked by a demon in the basement . Sister Victoria receives a special key from her fellow sister before she is dragged into the darkness of the cellar by the evil force. Sister Victoria initially survived the attack and was able to flee from the attacker. When the demon continues to follow her, the sister hangs herself jumping out of the window. Her body is soon discovered by the young villager Frenchie, who is tasked with providing supplies to the nuns in the convent.

When the Vatican learned of the incident, it immediately dispatched the traumatized priest Father Burke and the novice Sister Irene to investigate the incident. They travel to Romania and meet Frenchie, who is supposed to lead them to the abbey . When they arrive at the monastery, they find Sister Victoria's body in a sitting position, although Frenchie had previously placed her horizontally. In addition, in the corpse's right hand, they find the strange ornate key that Sister Victoria received when the demon attacked. Burke takes the key. In the crypt-like vestibule of the monastery, Burke and Irene meet the alleged abbess (the real abbess was recently killed by the demon). She informs them that they can no longer speak to the sisters today because the monastery observes the great Silentium between Vespers and morning prayer . Burke and Irene will be accommodated in the monastery guest house and will have the opportunity to speak to the convent the next day.

When Frenchie returns to his village, he is attacked by the corpse of a nun, but he manages to escape. During a conversation, Burke tells Irene about an experience from his past, that some time ago he carried out an exorcism on a little boy, but he died afterwards and that this guilt has plagued him ever since. During the night they are attacked by a demonic being. Burke is buried alive in the nearby cemetery, but is saved by Irene. Then they discover that there are old books about demons in the coffin.

The next day, Irene and Burke return to the monastery. However, only Irene is allowed to enter the cloister , as men in nunneries are not allowed to do so. She first gets to know some of the other sisters and learns that the convent cultivates eternal adoration in order to keep evil in check, alternating in prayer. Sister Oana tells Irene about the history of the abbey. This was originally a castle and was built during the Middle Ages by a duke obsessed with the occult and dark arts. The duke summoned a demonic entity that appeared through a crack in the catacombs , but the noble was killed by invading crusaders . These sealed the crack with an artifact that contained the " blood of Jesus Christ ". The castle was then rededicated into a monastery. As a result of bombing during the Second World War , the crack was opened again and the demonic being set free again, which now appears as a nun. In the vestibule, Father Burke discovers in a book that he had previously found in the coffin that the demon is "Valak". He also realizes that the alleged abbess was really Valak. Finally, Burke is pursued by Valak in the form of the little boy whom he exorcised and accidentally killed.

Frenchie decides to return to the abbey to save Irene and Burke. When Irene is attacked by Valak and haunted by dark visions, she joins the nuns who pray in the monastery church to fend off the demon. When Burke tries to enter the abbey through the cold store to also free Irene, he is attacked by sister Victoria's corpse. However, he is saved at the last moment by Frenchie, who cuts off the head of the undead nun with an ax. When the three are reunited, Irene realizes that none of the other nuns was actually present and that she had prayed alone the entire time. The group also learns that Sister Victoria was the last surviving nun in the convent and sacrificed herself to prevent Valak from taking possession of her body and thus free the demon from its "prison".

Assuming that Valak could only be stopped if they resealed the damaged crack with the Holy Blood relic , they retrieve the vial from its hiding place with the key they had previously found on Sister Victoria's body. When the group is separated again and Irene is lured into a pentagram , Valak takes possession of her. Frenchie smears some of the "blood of Jesus Christ" from the reliquary on Irene's face and drives the demon out again. Valak, however, pushes Frenchie away and Irene is thrown into the water-flooded chamber where the rift is. Burke is wounded by the ghost of the troubled boy, who disappears when Valak tries to drown Irene. Irene manages to grab the reliquary in battle. When Valak examines Irene's lifeless body, she spits the “blood of Christ” on the demon and banishes him back through the crack, which is then sealed again by the blood. After Frenchie rescued Irene from the water and resuscitated him, he gave her his real name, which was Maurice. He also tells her that he wants to return to his American homeland. With the help of Irenes and Maurice, Father Burke buries the found bodies of the sisters in consecrated earth . During the departure from the monastery, an upside-down cross becomes visible on Maurice's neck, which shows that Valak has partially taken possession of him.

In 1971, Carolyn Perron attended a university seminar where the Warrens demonstrated recordings of trying to assist in an exorcism on Maurice. This touched Lorraine and triggered a vision in her that shows how Ed will die. This reveals the circumstances, how it came to the investigation of the Warrens in the haunted house of the Perron family and to the first encounter with the demon Valak, who was to pursue the Warrens from then on.

The Nun has received some positive and mostly mixed to negative reviews so far. The rarely in-depth script by Gary Dauberman was criticized, which has to struggle with a barely existing plot and the associated narrative weaknesses of the story and often comes along with a clichéd figure drawing. The eerie and gloomy atmosphere was rated positively, although it could come up with a well-crafted camera and the impressive production design and the accompanying imaginative staging by Corin Hardy, but was not quite as frightening, as it was on the other hand with too many standardized jumps -Scares , which have nothing new to offer and are weakened with some misplaced humor and the resulting involuntary comedy. Furthermore, the potential of the demon nun was not used sufficiently and the same shock moments were routinely unwound. The acting achievements were praised, above all those of Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir, whose "comradely relationship" was carried out satisfactorily. In addition, it was partially noted that, although The Nun in its entirety does not come close to the previous Conjuring films and is one of the weakest contributions to the film series, it is still good and fine fun for fans of the genre.

The Rotten Tomatoes website determined a rating of 26% based on 45 positive and 129 critical reviews, with an average rating of 4.4 out of 10 possible points and a user rating of 38% with an average rating of 2.8 out of 5 possible points. The critics' consensus on the site states: " The Nun boasts of strong performances, a ghostly atmosphere and a few useful set pieces, but its sins contain a contradicting logic and narrative weakness." The website Metacritic calculated an average Metascore of 46 out of 100 possible Points based on 32 reviews from renowned media and a user rating of 5.5 out of 10 possible points. Reviews

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de awards 2 out of 5 stars and says that with Corin Hardy's The Nun, the Conjuring series has now got its first "unsightly dent". Ultimately, he draws the conclusion:

"'The Nun' is the first unsuccessful film in the ever-growing 'Conjuring' cinema universe."

Katrin Hemmerling of Robots & Dragons is of the opinion that “ The Nun doesn't really want to ignite”, because “Director Corin Hardy has focused on a lot of gloomy images and apparently did not shy away from deep in the cliché drawer of horror- Rummaging around genres ”. So she draws the conclusion:

The Nun is proof of how quickly a horror franchise can wear out. What came up as an interesting new figure in Conjuring 2 has now fizzled out in the Origin story into a walking cliché, which apart from a high density of jump scare and Latin lessons has little substance to offer. Die-hard fans of the franchise will probably get their money's worth with the cinema ticket. The rest of the audience should be able to wait for the home entertainment to start. "

Björn Schneider from Spielfilm.de awards 3 out of 5 stars and is of the opinion that not everything went wrong with The Nun . He praises the "impressive scenery" and original locations as well as the performance of the actors. He particularly emphasizes those of Taissa Farmiga, who endowed her role with a “fragile mixture of innocence and an unshakable belief in God” and embodied “the young novice with great expressiveness and passionate devotion”. Ultimately, he draws the conclusion:

"Mixed 'conjuring' spin-off with unsurprising jump scares that wear out heavily after a while, but with beautiful scenery and a good cast."
