Annabelle is an American horror film that was released in 2014. It is the first offshoot of the film Conjuring - The Visitation and the second film within the Conjuring universe .

Both films are inspired by the case of the real rag doll " Annabelle " from the 1970s, which was investigated by haunted researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren . In Conjuring the doll has a brief cameo , in Annabelle the plot revolves around a doll with supernatural abilities.

action

1970 in Santa Monica , California. Mia and John Form are expecting their first child soon. A present should make Mia even happier than she already is: John completes Mia's doll collection with a large doll. The following night, a Satanist couple kills the Higgins in a neighboring house and then invades the Forms house. Mia is seriously injured before the police can shoot the man; the young woman commits suicide while holding the new doll in her arms. It is Annabelle Higgins, the neighbors' daughter, who disappeared two years earlier and joined a sect.

After this incident, Mia, who survived the incident as well as her unborn child, stays in bed and tries to distract herself somehow. She still has the feeling that she is not alone. Electrical appliances run without anyone turning them on and an inexplicable fire breaks out in the house.

Fortunately, Mia's baby Leah is born healthy. By moving, they want to leave behind all of the negative experiences they had in the old house. In their new home, they are amazed to find that the doll that John last brought is in one of the moving boxes. John had actually thrown it in the trash at Mia's request. Mia places her with the others, and the mysterious incidents from her previous home begin to repeat themselves. Mia sees people wandering around the apartment when her husband is out. In addition, Mia and Leah are attacked by ghosts. Mia begins researching the raid on her former home. It turns out that Annabelle Higgins had tried to conjure up a demon. Mia finds more information in a book from Evelyn's bookstore, a neighbor from the apartment building. The demon that was conjured up has entered the doll and seeks the soul of an innocent being that is offered to him or is offered to him. The young woman is shocked to discover that the demon is after the soul of her child Leah.

In their distress, the couple turned to Father Perez for advice. He first suggests taking the ominous doll outside the home. While trying to take the doll to a holy place, his church, Father Perez is thrown through the air and seriously injured. He is admitted to the hospital where John works as a doctor.

The ghosts begin to rage again in the Forms apartment when Mia is alone with her neighbor Evelyn. Then baby Leah disappears. The demon drives Mia insane and makes her believe that she has slayed Leah in her madness. She begs the demon to give her the child back, but the demon wants Mia's life in return. In the end, Mia is nervously ready to sacrifice her life for that of her daughter. John returning home can barely prevent her from jumping out the window. Instead, Evelyn, who once caused the accidental death of her own daughter, falls into the depths in the hope that the demon will rest afterwards.

The doll disappears after Evelyn's suicide. However, the viewer learns that after a short time it will be offered for sale in an antique shop. An elderly lady shows up and asks the salesman about a suitable present for her daughter, who works as a nurse. This closes the circle to the very first scene in which young nurses report eerie incidents with the doll, and it is a reference to the actual occurrences .

background

The film was shot on a budget of $ 6.5 million. The worldwide box office is more than 256 million US dollars.

All apartment and elevator scenes were filmed in a real apartment building. These are the Langham Apartments in Los Angeles .
