action
Josh Lambert and his wife Renai have moved into a family home for themselves and their three children, but mysterious things happen soon after they move in. You can hear footsteps in the attic and voices on the baby monitor . When their son Dalton falls from a ladder in the attic and inexplicably falls into a deep coma, the Lamberts grow to believe the house is cursed.
After further terrible events, such as bloody handprints on Dalton's bed, the family moves to another dwelling in order to be able to escape the mysterious events. But since similar strange things are going on in the new house after a short time, they ask the medium Elise, an acquaintance of Josh's mother Lorraine, for help. Elise walks through the house and sees a terrible, black figure with a red face hanging over Dalton's bed. She is now sure that it is not the house, but rather the Lamberts' little son - Dalton - that is the cause of the phenomena.
Elise explains that Dalton's spirit has the ability to disappear into a parallel world via astral travel . In this parallel world, he had drawn the attention of a demon who was now trying to seize Dalton's body. She suspects that Dalton's spirit is trapped in the parallel world and can no longer return to his body, which she sees as the cause of his medically inexplicable coma. Dalton's father Josh learns that he also visited the parallel world in his childhood. He was also afraid of an old woman. Josh's mother Lorraine thought this old woman was imaginary, but several photos from that time show her next to Josh. Josh finally remembers and realizes that these incidents are the reason why he has not enjoyed being photographed since. Elise helped him to get rid of these fears. Josh seems to have inherited the ability for out of body experience to Dalton.
Elise then tries to contact Dalton's ghost in a séance . She succeeds, but she also draws the attention of the beings who hold Dalton's spirit captive. Elise tells Josh that there is only one way to enable Dalton to return to his body: Josh must go to the parallel world himself to find Dalton's ghost and help him return. Josh agrees: He finds his son and, after a hectic escape and battle with the evil forces, manages to bring Dalton back to reality.
After Josh and his son return to the real world, Lorraine and Renai take care of Dalton, while Josh and Elise are in an adjoining room. During a conversation between Elise and Josh, Elise gets a bad feeling, whereupon she reflexively takes a picture of Josh. Josh gets angry and strangles Elise. Renai hears screams, walks into the room and finds that Elise is dead. She's looking for Josh but can't find him. She finds the camera and sees the picture Elise took. It does not show Josh, but the old woman her husband was so afraid of as a child. She realizes that it is not Josh but the old woman who is in Josh's body. In the last scene Josh appears and grabs Renai's shoulder from behind.
Reviews
"Even if all the strengths and weaknesses of Haunted House Movies are gathered here, it is the careful atmosphere-conscious style, the steady increase from smoldering disaster to naked horror and a consistently dark ending that should more than satisfy genre fans."
“In the generation of horror shockers, this subtle horror film is a welcome change and knows how to captivate with its dense atmosphere. At Insidious, director James Wan knows very well how to present a story to the viewer in a sophisticated and well-made way. With this he proves that he is the right man for every kind of horror! "
"Solid horror film, which is completely based on the atmospheric traditions of the horror genre and develops its eerie effect comprehensibly and atmospherically tightly from the plot."
