Saw ( dt. Saw ) is an American horror - thriller - splatter film series to the 2004 to 2017 by Lions Gate Entertainment eight films were released in total. The first seven parts appeared annually from 2004 to 2010; an eighth part titled Jigsaw came out in 2017, and a ninth part titled Saw: Spiral is expected to hit theaters in 2021. In the USA, the first 8 films released each year on the Friday before Halloween .

The origins of Saw are examined in the fourth part of the series:

John Kramer's life couldn't be better. He is a successful civil engineer, highly intelligent and also a devoted husband. His wife Jill Tuck runs a rehab clinic for drug addicts and is expecting a child. But then his life changes dramatically. In an incident in the drug clinic with a patient, Jill loses their child. It is later learned that Amanda Young (the first "victim" and later accomplice of Jigsaw) also played a role in this incident. In the end, John distances himself completely from his friends and his wife. Eventually the two split up.

John later learns that he has an incurable brain tumor (glioblastoma multiforme). Little by little he comes to the realization that most people do not value their life and waste it completely pointlessly. Plagued by this certainty, he decides to commit suicide and drives his car over a cliff. As if by a miracle, he survived. From now on his attitude to life changes dramatically. He now has the idea that certain people learn to appreciate the value of life only when they are on the verge of death and their will to survive is "tested". He then designs torture machines in which selected people are “tested” and decide for themselves: live or die. The media give it the name "Jigsaw" because it cuts a piece of the puzzle out of the skin of all victims who do not survive its tests. All of them lack the instinct for survival, according to John. Later after the death of John and his assistant Amanda in the third and fourth part (which play parallel to each other), it turns out that Detective Mark Hoffman continues his work as an accomplice and successor, after he killed his sister in a jigsaw at the beginning -Falle let die and he was subsequently taken in by John as an accomplice. However, since the FBI and the police are getting closer and closer to him, he kills those responsible without testing the "objects" 'will to survive. But after John's ex-wife Jill in the sixth part brings him, due to the last will of John, himself in a fatal situation, which he survives, however, he ensures that Jill dies. But Jigsaw's last accomplice, Dr. Gordon, who himself survived a trap in the first film, was warned by John that if something should happen to Jill, he should bring Hoffman to the place that "should be the most important" for him, the bathroom from the first Saw -Movie. Dr. Gordon now leaves Hoffman in the bathroom with the words "Game Over".

The film series is based on a ten-minute short film of the same name from 2003 (director and editor: James Wan; script and leading actor: Leigh Whannell).

The short film was mainly intended to promote actors and studios for a full-length film based on this concept, which was eventually implemented by Lionsgate . Saw IV and Saw V made it into the top 10 most successful films by Lionsgate, Saw II , Saw III and Saw 3D - Completion even made it into the top five.

In addition, the film series set the world record for "Most Successful Horror Film Series" at San Diego's Comic-Con and thus got an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .

classification

The communication scientist Christopher Sharrett classifies the film series together with Eli Roths Hostel in the genre of torture porn : the plot and also the ultimately hollow morality merely offer a pretext for showing an adolescent male audience excruciatingly detailed depictions of various forms of torture . This gives the series the psychological content and the subversive social criticism that important works of horror films such as Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby or George A. Romero's The Night of the Living Dead showed. This impoverishes the genre and makes Saw films reactionary .

Video games & other media

In November 2009, the publisher Konami released the survival horror game Saw: The Game . Zombie Studios developed the game for PC and consoles. The character has to fight his way through the corridors of an abandoned lunatic asylum in the guise of Detective Tapp, which has been set with deadly traps by Jigsaw. The sequel Saw II: Flesh & Blood was released on October 19, 2010.

In addition to the video games, there are also numerous CDs with the respective soundtracks for the films, a comic called Saw: Rebirth , which is supposed to be a prequel to the original Saw film and was released together with Saw II , and an online click adventure game by the name of Saw: The Game .

David Tapp and Amanda Young are part of the downloadable "Saw Chapter" of the video game Dead by Daylight .

Since, according to GamingXP, “SAW” is pretty good compared to many other games whose origins are films. Unfortunately, small flaws and the average graphics do not make the game a top title.

For GamingXP, the game implementation "Saw II" does everything right so far, and apart from a few technical subtleties, this game is even recommended to those who are not familiar with the film. Tobin Bell was implemented excellently, the mood fits very well, and surprise shocks were largely avoided. Fans of the Saw series should definitely take a look at “Saw II”, everyone else can definitely be encouraged to play.
