Danny Glover livers (* 22. July 1946 in San Francisco , California ) is an American actor , film director , UNICEF - Special Envoy , political activist and singer . Glover was best known for his role as Sergeant Roger Murtaugh as a partner of Mel Gibson in the Lethal Weapon films.

life and career

Danny Glover graduated from San Francisco State University . He was a member of the revolutionary Black Panther Party in his youth . Since 1975 he has been married to Asake Bomani, with whom he has a daughter. He got into acting through his work at the Black Actors Workshop at the American Conservatory Theater .

Since 1979 he has worked in more than 180 film and television productions of various genres. He became better known in 1984 for a role in The Color Purple . In 1987 he played in Lethal Weapon - Two Steel-Hard Professionals , for which he was honored with the Image Award . He was to receive this award seven more times. Glover was also featured in the three sequels.

Glover is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Forum TransAfrica , an organization dedicated to educating the public about the economic, political, and moral ramifications of U.S. foreign policy and its impact on the African continent, Caribbean, and Latin American Africans. He is also a UNICEF special envoy.

As a director, Glover appeared with the short film Override (1994) on the Showtime TV channel.

Glover participated in 2008 among others as a producer on the Palestinian feature film The Salt of the Sea . He has worked as a producer in various functions since the 1990s, and since the 2000s he has been an executive producer in documentaries in particular.

Uwe Friedrichsen was his German dubbing voice in all Lethal Weapon films . Jürgen Kluckert is currently Glover's standard voice.

Political commitment

Glover campaigns for the release of prisoners like the Miami Five . He is also on the advisory board of the South American news broadcaster telesur .

He also regularly supports unions such as the UFCW or SEIU in their commitment to the rights and employment conditions of workers and employees.

Glover was also featured in the 2008 documentary, The Garden , about the eviction of Latinos from a community gardening project in Los Angeles.

Hugo Chávez was a personal friend of Glover and in 2007 funded a film project Glover about François-Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture . When Jean-Bertrand Aristide returned to Haiti in 2011 from exile in South Africa forced by the United States and France , Glover accompanied him with media coverage.

Glover describes himself as a socialist and supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 US presidential election.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it would be honoring him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in January 2022 for his social commitment .
