occupation

The salt of the sea , original title in Arabic ملح هذا البحر, DMG Milḥ Hāḏā l-Baḥr (English Salt of This Sea ), is a 2008 Palestinian feature film directed by Annemarie Jacir .

The film is a road movie , it shows landscapes and cities in Israel and the West Bank . Much is said in the film about suffering, but it is not shown directly. Some of the situations give an idea of how difficult life can be for the locals. Nothing is shown that could directly stir up the audience emotionally and direct their thinking in a certain direction, such as: B. Combat or death. The film is less about a judgment on the Palestine conflict than about two young people's search for identity under the given circumstances.

action

Soraya, a young Palestinian woman living in New York, is traveling to Israel for the first time. Her grandparents were expelled from this country 60 years earlier. On arrival at Tel Aviv airport , Soraya was harassed by border officials, but was finally allowed into the country. Your first destination is Ramallah . There she meets with a friend and wants to withdraw money from an account that her grandfather had opened in a Palestinian bank before the eviction. Because she cannot prove that her grandfather is dead due to missing papers, she is not paid the money. Soraya meets Emad, a Ramallah-born Palestinian who has never been to the sea. Together with Emad, Soraya raids the bank, but only takes the money that is due to her with her. The two then travel together to the house of Soraya's ancestors in Jaffa , which is now a district of Tel Aviv. In doing so, they illegally cross the border into Israel. A young Israeli woman now lives in the house of Soraya's deceased grandfather who initially shows understanding for Soraya. She allows Soraya and Emad to live in the house. When Soraya claims the house that once belonged to her ancestors for herself, the Israeli throws them out. As the film progresses, they continue to travel through Israel and visit places where their ancestors lived. You will spend the night in the settlement where the Deir Yasin massacre took place in 1948 . In a small town, Soraya and Emad are accidentally caught by the Israeli police. Emad is taken back to Ramallah and Soraya is put on a plane to the United States.
