action

The Poker -Spielerin Annabelle Bransford and Bret Maverick both try each 25,000 US dollars to gain entry fee for a poker competition. The competition is organized by Commodore Duvall and is to take place on his paddle steamer on the Mississippi . On the way there they are accompanied by Marshal Zane Cooper, who is supposed to oversee the game.

Bret Maverick is persuaded by an Indian friend to use a Russian prince as a manhunt target. For this, the Indian receives $ 2,000, but pretends to Bret that he only asked for $ 1,000 as payment, of which he gives him the entire $ 1,000. A little later, Maverick meets the prince again, pretends to be a government official and receives the missing 6,000 dollars through blackmail and threats with a murder charge, so that he and Annabelle can participate in the tournament.

During the night, the game is paused for exactly one hour. If you don't get to the poker table in time, you lose everything. At this hour Annabelle and Bret are in each other's arms. When Annabelle has left the room, Bret finds the outside of the door locked with a chain. He does gymnastics on the paddle wheel on an upper deck and comes to the gaming table with the last stroke of the clock. Maverick wins the competition in a dramatic final with a royal flush against equally strong hands (four eights, straight flush) among his opponents. To everyone's surprise, however, the US $ 500,000 prize pool is stolen from Zane Cooper. When the escaped Cooper and Duvall want to split the money, Maverick finds the two and takes the money from them. A little later, Maverick is relaxing in a bathtub (bath house) when suddenly Cooper appears. After a short dialogue with Maverick, he turns out to be his father. After Cooper also takes a bath, Annabelle Bransford appears surprisingly. Since she is sure that neither of the two men dares to get out of the bathtub naked, she steals the money that was in a bag at the other end of the bathroom. After a few glances at the bath water of the two men and a suggestive saying, she leaves the bath house grinning. After a brief argument with his father, Maverick pulls one of his boots up by the bathtub and shows his father its contents. It is half of the money he had won, which he had put in it as a precaution and in an obvious foreboding of Mrs. Bransford's appearance.

Trivia

  • From 1997 there was a magic show Maverick in the Warner Bros. Movie World (today Movie Park Germany ) amusement park in Bottrop-Kirchhellen , which was loosely based on the characters of the film with a framework. Here Maverick and Annabelle had to face an evil wizard. The music for this was based almost entirely on Randy Newman's soundtrack from the film. From 2000 there was only the figure of Maverick , which was initially embodied by the now well-known artist Jan Rouven . Since there was no longer any connection to the film anyway, the film reference was dropped and the show was only presented in western style.
  • The probability of the final hand appearing (royal flush in spades, straight flush 3-7 in hearts, four eights) is 1 in 195,367,214,485,443.

Cameo appearances

In the scene where Maverick is in the bank to get the money his friend owes him, actor Danny Glover makes a cameo as a bank robber. Danny Glover previously starred in three Lethal Weapon films , also starring alongside Mel Gibson and directed by Richard Donner . During this encounter, the lethal weapon theme is briefly hinted at. When the two meet in the bank, Maverick lifts the robber's mask and they both look surprised and are clearly thinking about whether they have seen each other somewhere or know each other, but then both shake their heads in disbelief. When Glover flees with his gang, he uses a winged saying from the Lethal Weapon series: "I'm too old for this shit."

Reviews

"A funny western comedy that conjures up so many aces up its sleeve that you can bet on them without risk - or as the saying goes in poker: All In!"

- CountryMusicNews.de

"Colorful poker ballad with a lot of swing and visual opulence ."

- Evening newspaper , Munich

"Motifs from a 35-year-old television series were played up into a movie that stifles its parodic approaches in external effort and inconvenience."

“Richard Donner presented a particularly effortless piece in the series of smirking westerners. A gun and card cartoon comedy with road movie appeal, full of beautiful "wild" locations and vain shrewdness. "
