The man in the mountains (original title: The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams ) is an American television film and an American western television series .

The productions are based on the 1973 novel Life and Times of Grizzly Adams by Charles E. Sellier , in which he describes the life of James Capen Adams . However, the film and the series only adapt the idea and shift the plot spatially and temporally away from the life of the historical person.

action

The series is set in a largely undeveloped area in the western United States in the mid-19th century. At the beginning of the series, the main character, James "Grizzly" Adams, because he is accused of a crime he did not commit, flees to the mountains and hides in the wilderness. Here he builds a hut and begins a new life. A main element of the series is the closeness to nature, which is shown in extensive and varied landscape photos and many animal photos. One of the storylines is taming animals, which is a talent of Adams. He gets his nickname "Grizzly" Adams for the taming of a young grizzly , whom he calls Ben - the historical person James Adams also had such a bear, which he named after Benjamin Franklin .

The most important supporting roles are those of the trapper Mad Jack with his stubborn mule number seven and the Indian Nakoma , who support Adams in his adventures. These usually consist of a threat to friends and casual acquaintances who find themselves in dire straits and dangers, which Adams overcomes alone or with the support of others.

In contrast to other western series of this time, violence and the use of firearms are generally avoided. The supporting roles and guest roles rather address problems related to family, hunting, resettlement by “whites” and conflicts with the local Indian tribes.
