Denver Pyle

Denver Dell Pyle (born May 11, 1920 in Bethune , Colorado , † December 25, 1997 in Burbank , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Pyle worked as a drummer after graduating from high school and was a seaman in the merchant navy during World War II . From 1947 he played small supporting roles in feature films , often without naming his name in the credits. From the early 1950s he also worked for television. In particular in western series, he was to be seen regularly, including eight episodes of Bonanza and 14 episodes of Smoking Colts . As a result, he got bigger roles in successful westerns like Johnny Guitar - When Women Hate , The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Man From The Great River . In 1967 he had a supporting role in Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde , before that he played the grandfather in Tammy, the houseboat girl , for 26 episodes , which also made him famous in Germany. In the 1970s he first played the character of Mad Jack in the series The Man in the Mountains before he was cast in 1979 for his most famous role, Uncle Jesse Duke in the television series A Duke Rarely Comes Alone , which he did in 146 episodes until 1985 played. He had his last acting appearance in 1997 in the television production based on the series, Family Reunion of Chaoten , in the same year he succumbed to cancer.

His brother Willis Pyle (1914-2016) was an illustrator and animator.
