action

Author Spencer Paley is a somewhat neurotic and safety-conscious father who sees potential harm in every act his son Michael does. However, since his wife Donna wants him to be a better male role model, she asks him to accompany Michael on his camping trip with the class to Santa Catalina Island . Spencer participates somewhat involuntarily and already starts to complain about it while driving to the excursion. Michael just wishes that Spencer would scold less and in particular not embarrass him. Although he promises him that, it doesn't take long before he starts tearing up his sayings and complaining again. After the ferry to the island arrives shortly after midnight and there is still a 45-minute walk, Spencer's anger is great. So he refuses to join the hike and takes the girls' ferry to Camp Buffalo Valley .

The next morning, his sarcasm about the bad camp is unbroken. The ex-marine and firefighter Chet doesn't like Spencer's sayings at all and Michael repeatedly admonishes his father to stop. But the embarrassment does not stop for Michael, because in the archery that follows they fail as well as in the pentathlon. When it comes to paddling, they both do so badly that they not only lose a race against a girl's boat, but also capsize their 30-year-old paddle boat, so Spencer has to pay $ 400 for it. When they then go on an expedition to a silver mine, Spencer also collapses because of his claustrophobia . Only when they play basketball against Chet and his son Chip and pull themselves together can they win something for the first time thanks to a team effort. This ends the disputes between father and son, at least for the time being.

Because after a boisterous campfire they both want to go to their tent. Unfortunately, Chet completely destroyed it before. When Spencer confronts him, Chet replies flippantly and attacks him. Michael feels so embarrassed that he just wants to leave. The next morning, however, somewhat reluctantly, he accepts Spencer's apology and takes part in the final competition, a treasure hunt in the silver mine. After fighting their way through cobwebs and past snakes, they'll be the first to find the treasure. Only shortly afterwards Chet comes with his son and claims him for himself. Again there is a fight, with all four falling through the wooden floor into a cave near a deep abyss. It is only because they work together that they can barely free themselves in the greatest need. Then Spencer and Chet make up. Chet is also honored as a treasure hunter together with his son Michael and receives an award for bravery. They tell Donna all of their adventures after they return home. But she can hardly believe what she is hearing. When Spencer agrees to do more with Michael, maybe even bungee jumping in addition to a camping trip , Donna just says not to overdo it again.

criticism

In the Variety Tony Scott said that the film "not promising" sounds, and the "undifferentiated director" did not help, but despite the "generally superficial acting" it creates Saget "by his individual display" a "real, if not sympathetic Figure ”.

The lexicon of the international film said: "Undemanding outdoor comedy, in which the sparks never jump over."
