Kathleen Alice "Kathy" Mattea (born June 21, 1959 in South Charleston , West Virginia ) is an American country singer and songwriter who celebrated her greatest success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In her career she has sold over three million albums so far and received five gold and one platinum award.

Life

Kathy Mattea began her musical career during college as a singer with the bluegrass group Pennsboro . In 1978 she dropped out of her studies and went to Nashville , where she made her way as a waitress, tour guide and secretary. In 1982 she worked with Bobby Goldsboro for a while . She produced demos and had minor appearances until she got a recording contract with the Mercury Records label in 1983 .

Her first singles reached middle places on the country charts. Her debut album was released in 1984. Two years later she had her first top 10 success with Love at the Five and Dime by Nanci Griffith . Two singles were released from the 1987 album Untasted Honey , which reached number 1: Goin 'Gone and Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses ; the latter was named "Single Of The Year" by the CMA in 1988 .

A year later she married the songwriter Jon Vezner. Despite some health problems, she continued to make good chart placements and was also successful with her own songs. Her most famous composition is Walking Away a Winner .

Their two albums Coal (2008) and Calling Me Home (2012) offered more traditional country music to Americana and bluegrass . In 2014 the Christmas EP Go Tell It on the Mountain followed and four years later the album Pretty Bird .

In addition to her musical career, she has also been a speaker on topics such as the environment and motivation for many years.
