action

The American Charles Salt and Briton Christopher Pepper are best friends and owners of successful nightclubs Salt & Pepper in London district of Soho . However, the criminalist Inspector Crabbe is always sitting on their necks, who tries to prove the duo of dishonest deals.

One night, Pepper finds an Asian woman lying on the floor of his office. Assuming she was drunk, he approaches her on a date. However, it is dying; their demise is grist to the mill of the biased inspector who arrests them. It turns out that the dead woman was a British secret agent . Her superior Colonel Woodstock manages to recruit Salt and Pepper as agents with a large sum of money, whereupon they are released from prison. However, Inspector Crabbe is still convinced of her guilt.

The friends act as soon as they are in the world of spies, and there are chases and explosions . Both are stunned and find themselves in a submarine , which after their escape, however, presents itself as a dummy that is under strict guard in the garden of a remote mansion . When Salt and Pepper return to the scene with the summoned Inspector Crabbe, the house is deserted and the boat has disappeared. Salt and Pepper are on the trail of a plot against the British government: a criminal syndicate is threatening a nuclear attack from the Hercules submarine if the government does not step down and appoint its representative as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom . The Syndicate crew had used the dummy to practice taking over the boat

Salt and Pepper manage to break into the headquarters of the Syndicate and neutralize the criminals with a cannon. Both are from the Queen to knight beaten and celebrated with a grand parade, but Inspector Crabbe remains for them to continue on their heels.

production

Produced in 1967, the comedy premiered on July 5, 1968. In 1969 the sequel The Unlucky Birds was directed by Jerry Lewis , who could fall back on the two main actors Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peter Lawford as well as the screenwriter Michael Pertwee.

criticism

"Entertaining crime game with well-prepared gags and technical sophistication, but without the bite that the political topic could actually have inspired."

“'Salt and Pepper' is at least nominally a comedy. However, it contains scenes whose brutality the comedy format cannot neutralize and represents a strange exercise in inconsistency. "
