action
Overworked and alcoholic New York cop Jack Mosley is charged with taking Witness Eddie Bunker out of prison and into a courthouse 16 blocks away. On the way, two assassins attack bunkers, but are stopped by Mosley. He then hides in a bar with Bunker, who is supposed to testify in an important case.
Frank Nugent - Mosley's ex-partner - appears there and tries to convince him to let Bunker die on the transport. He is supposed to testify in court against a police officer who is involved in a corruption affair. Mosley initially quarrels with himself, but then decides to protect bunkers. After a spectacular chase in which the two even kidnap a full bus, Mosley reaches the courthouse. In the meantime he has let the bunker run. Through various scenes, the viewer learned that Mosley himself was involved in the corruption cases. But out of regret he wants to clear everything up. A colleague tries to kill Mosley. However, a sniper strikes the assassin down beforehand. Mosley lets the machinations explode, but also ends up in jail himself.
When he was released from prison after two years, Bunker sent him a birthday cake from his own bakery, as he had previously promised him.
Reviews
James Berardinelli described the film on movie-reviews.colossus.net as one of Richard Donner's worse films. The "chemistry" between Mosley and Bunker would not be right. Berardinelli sarcastically advises that it is better to take the subway.
The lexicon of the international film says: "Constructed thematically simple, the thriller impresses with some excellently staged action sequences."
Awards
Mos Def was nominated for a Black Movie Award in 2006.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
Others
Richard Donner urged visitors not to wear fur at the premiere of the film. He himself wore a badge against fur and used a poster from PETA that read “ Fur Is Dead ” in one scene of the film.
The DVD features an alternate ending in which Frank throws himself in front of Jack, shortly before Frank's helper, Bob, shoots him. The bullet goes through both of them and kills Jack. Frank Nugent survives injured. In the end, Bunker sent the cake anyway, believing Jack was still alive.
Director Richard Donner makes a cameo at the end of the film when a cake is placed on the table for Mosley .
16 Blocks is a remake of the 1977 Clint Eastwood film The Man Who Never Gives Up .
The film grossed around $ 66 million in cinemas worldwide, including $ 29 million in the United States.
