Streets of New York (original title: The Saint of Fort Washington ) is a drama about the situation of two homeless people in New York City in the early 1990s, played by Matt Dillon and Danny Glover . The film premiered on September 13, 1993 in Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival . In Germany the film was released on November 2, 1995 on VHS and on May 28, 2004 on DVD. The German TV title is Die Helden von Fort Washington .

Unemployed Matthew loses his home after illegal demolition of his home in Pelham Parkway, Bronx . While going to the social welfare office, he meets an overwhelmed mother, whom he accompanies to the nearest home. However, he is not allowed to stay there because it is a family home. Matthew is now forced to stay in a homeless shelter in Washington Heights, where he meets Jerry, who is also homeless. Jerry is a Vietnam veteran who lost his house and family members in the course of his divorce, ended up on the street and is now Matthew's companion. He has been suffering from schizophrenia from a young age. He thinks he is a photographer and takes photos with his disposable camera, even if there is no film in it. In the homeless shelter, they both meet the appointed homeless boss, Little Leroy, who wants to ambush Matthew in the toilet, but Jerry rushes to help and overpowers him.
Matthew and Jerry flee Washington Heights and decide never to return there. They find a home with the homeless Rosario and his pregnant wife. Jerry, who previously worked as a window cleaner, is now teaching Matthew the basics. They decide to stick together and buy an apartment with the savings. When both are forced to return to the homeless shelter by the police due to the cold weather, both fear for their lives. Matthew is left alone by Jerry for a moment when Leroy finds Matthew alone and hits and kills him in a fight with the knife. The film ends with Jerry visiting Matthew's coffin.
Dramaturgy and genesis
The film uses sensitive images about the situation of the homeless in the megacity of New York. Hopelessness, exclusion and the hard life of those affected are discussed here. But the film also underlines their dreams and wishes, the hope for a better life. The film was filmed entirely in New York City, also with the involvement of real homeless extras.

The film was less successful at the box office in the United States, grossing $ 57,115.

The score was penned by the composer James Newton Howard , who became known through soundtracks such as Blood Diamond .

- In order to be able to put himself more deeply into his role, Danny Glover disguised himself as a homeless person and went into the situations they are exposed to in order to better understand the feelings and problems of the homeless.
