action

On an alien planet, which people later refer to as Terra, an alien species lives in a pacifistic and nature-loving culture on a relatively primitive level. The only notable achievement are motorized gliders, which the aliens use to expand their natural ability to fly.

When one day superior spaceships appear and kidnap citizens, the tech-savvy Mala pursues one of the spaceships, as her father was also kidnapped. Using her local knowledge, she manages to involve the spaceship in an accident and thus force it to land. As Mala approaches the spaceship, the pilot threatens her with a weapon, but the pilot passes out shortly thereafter and it becomes apparent that the attacking species is human.

Mala brings the pilot to her home and is asked by the pilot's assistant robot, Giddy, who has followed her home, to rescue the pilot, Lieutenant James "Jim" Stanton, as his oxygen supply threatens to fail and the planet's atmosphere is threatened is toxic to humans. As a condition for helping with the rescue, Giddy Mala teaches human language to the brain via download. The two then build a tent and an apparatus that generates oxygen from a local plant.

Later, Jim comes to and is rescued by Mala when he breaks out of the tent because a rescue team is flying through the town he wants to attract attention when he falls out the door and almost falls to his death.

During Jim's recent unconsciousness, Giddy Mala reveals the background to human operations on the planet. Due to lack of resources, humanity expanded to Mars and Venus and terraformed the planets. However, when the colonies demanded their independence, a war broke out in which all three planets were destroyed. The remnants of the human species have been looking for a habitable planet in a generation ship for centuries and found it in "Terra".

With a moving model of the earth with the moon, Mala convinces Jim of her technical abilities, whereupon he offers her a trade. She helps him repair his ship and he helps her free her father. After the two have made all the necessary spare parts, Mala's friend Senn visits them surprisingly and discovers Jim, whereupon he informs the council of elders. Mala and Jim have to flee and begin looking for Jim's ship, which has disappeared. You will eventually find it in what appears to be an older and hidden construction of the Terrans, pointing to their warlike past. There they also meet hostile Terrans who have advanced weapons, but can capture the ship and fly to the earthly ark .

Once in orbit, they are delighted that Jim is still alive. However, he decides to talk to his people alone for the time being and asks Mala to stay on board his hunter. On the now very old generation ship, on which fatal accidents constantly occur due to the structural condition, Jim is celebrated as a hero because he can provide the military, the Earth Force, with information about the military capabilities of the Terrans, which is led by General Hemmer the planet wants to conquer to ensure the survival of humanity. Mala has now left Jim's ship and is armed with Jim's laser pistol and goes in search of her father. She finds him and the other Terrans in a storage facility with an attached garbage incineration / crematorium. She tries to free him, but is discovered by soldiers. Her father kills himself and the guards by shooting a pane so that the air of the room escapes into the vacuum of space. Mala in the next room is captured by guards.

The general uses video recordings of the death of the guards at the hands of Mala's father as further propaganda against the "evil" aliens in front of the council, which, however, still denies him permission to exterminate the Terrans and conquer the planet. The general then carries out a military coup and dismisses the council. To the protests of the council he replied that future generations should judge his actions. Future generations would only exist thanks to him, said the general.

The coup leads to a falling out between Jim and his brother Stewart, who supports the general, while Jim declares that they must be loyal to the council as the highest state body and not to the general.

After the general Jim reveals that the ark only has oxygen for two months, he locks Mala and Jim's brother in a room with a Terran atmosphere and gives Jim the opportunity to flood the room with oxygen to save Stewart, however with it to kill Mala. Jim activates the oxygen supply, but orders Giddy to do everything possible to save Mala, so he opens the cell and gives Mala a breathing apparatus. Giddy and Mala flee the ark and return to Terra.

The council of elders has now reactivated the modern aircraft from the warlike epochs of the Terrans in order to be able to defend themselves. Referring to his orders to protect them, Mala manages to get Giddy to provide tactical information about the humans to the Terrans.

The attack is now being prepared on the ark, the main aim of which is to set up and activate the Terraformer, a machine that changes the planet's atmosphere within 7 days during normal operation , but also represents the only source of oxygen for the generation ship and so, once thrown off, is successful otherwise the ship will run out of oxygen.

The Earth Force attack begins, and the Terrans defend themselves with the reactivated gliders, which inflict heavy losses on the people in their technically advanced, but very poorly maintained ships. While the Terrans only suffer comparatively small losses, the general forces his troops to continue with the attack in an enormous numerical superiority and places the terraformer, whose bridge serves the general as a command bunker, near the population center of the Terrans. The ships of the people now defend the terraformer, who himself has guns, against the desperate attacks of the Terrans. The General overloads the Former in order to complete the process faster and sends in more reinforcements.

Much of the Terran fleet is forced to withdraw. However, after Senn's glider was shot down by an earthly hunter, Mala, driven by revenge, hunts the hunter, who turns out to be Stewart. He begs Jim for help against the Terran glider. But when Jim realizes that he is being controlled by Mala, he brings his ship between Mala and Stewart, ending the fight between the two. He salutes Mala himself and then sets course for the former. He penetrated the defensive fire and destroyed the command post, where the general stayed behind, with his on-board missiles. The local overconcentration of oxygen generated by the too rapid oxygen production intensifies the explosion, so that the former is destroyed. While Mala and Stewart can save themselves, Jim sacrifices himself for the Terrans, but at the same time destroys the livelihood of humanity.

The Terran city is glad that the attack could be repelled. Mala and Senn see each other again and are both happy because they thought of each other that they were dead. The eldest praises Mala for saving her people, but she is sad that humanity is now facing its annihilation. However, the elder of the Terrans encourages them and explains that there are always alternatives.

A short time later, with the help of the Terrans, the people built an oxygen dome under which they set up a settlement. In the middle is a statue of Jim, who through his sacrifice made it possible for Terrans and humans to live together peacefully on the planet.
