Dennis Quaid
Dennis William Quaid (born April 9, 1954 in Houston , Texas ) is an American actor . He is the younger brother of actor Randy Quaid .
Life
Dennis Quaid was born the younger son of William Rudy Quaid, an electrician, and Juanita B. Quaid, a real estate agent. His family has Irish and French roots and belonged to the Baptist Church. After his first acting experiences in high school , Quaid studied Mandarin at Bellaire High School in Bellaire (Texas) and then at the University of Houston . Without a degree, he moved in 1976 to his older brother Randy, who had already established a foothold in Hollywood . Quaid made his cinema debut there in 1977 with I never promised you a rose garden .
Career
In 1979, Quaid played one of the leading roles alongside Dennis Christopher in the coming-of-age drama Four Crazy Guys - We All Can Make Us, None . The film was a surprise success, grossed ten times its budget, and won several film awards. In 1983 Quaid starred in the four-time Oscar- winning film The Stuff the Heroes Are Made of an astronaut. In the same year he also took on the lead role in the horror film Jaws 3-D .
With this film at the latest, Quaid was finally able to establish himself as a leading actor and played the leading role in the two science fiction films Enemy Mine - Geliebter Feind (1985) and Die Reise ins Ich (1987). However, both films failed financially at the box office. In 1989, Quaid played the singer of the same name in the biopic Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis - A Life for Rock'n'Roll . This portrayal earned him a lot of praise from film critics.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Dennis Quaid experienced a brief career break because of a drug addiction, during which he temporarily went to an addiction clinic. In 1994 he played the gunslinger Doc Holliday as Wyatt Earp in Lawrence Kasdan's western Wyatt Earp - The life of a legend alongside Kevin Costner . In 1995 Quaid starred alongside Julia Roberts in the male lead in the romantic comedy Power of Love .
In 1996 he worked for the second time (after Long Riders , 1980) with his brother Randy for the play True West . In the same year he played the leading role of the knight Bowen in the fantasy film Dragonheart , which was a decent box office success and helped the fantasy genre to revive. In the following years Quaid impersonated leading roles in the films A Twin Seldom Comes Alone (1998) and Every Damn Sunday (1999), which also both became acceptable box office hits.
In the thriller Frequency he played alongside James Caviezel a firefighter who communicates with his son in the future via a radio. This was followed by participation in Steven Soderbergh's Oscar-winning film Traffic - Power of the Cartel and the lead role in Roland Emmerich's blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow , which, with grossing over 500 million US dollars, became the financially most successful film project in Quaid's career.
Quaid also received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the homosexual husband of Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes ' drama Dem Himmel so Fern (2002) and for the role of Bill Clinton in Richard Loncraines television production The Special Relationship (2010), which among others Has received nominations for the Emmy , Golden Globe Awards , Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Satellite Awards .
From 2012 to 2013 Quaid played the lead role of Sheriff Ralph Lamb in the series Vegas , which was discontinued after a season. In 2017 he took on a bigger role in the hit dramedy film Bailey - A Friend for Life .

Dennis Quaid is also active as a singer for the band The Sharks and composer . Quaid is also one of Hollywood's top performing amateur golfers. In 2005 he was an amateur with a handicap of 1 and was number one on the list of celebrities in golf . With that he surpassed Michael Jordan , Andre Agassi and Alice Cooper by several strokes.
Quaid got married four times. His first marriage to actress PJ Soles lasted from 1978 to 1983. Quaid met Meg Ryan in 1987 while filming the film Die Reise ins Ich , whom he married in 1991. Their son Jack Quaid was born on April 24, 1992. Quaid and Ryan's marriage was divorced in July 2001. As of July 2004, Quaid was married to real estate agent Kimberly Buffington. In November 2007, they became the parents of twins born to a surrogate mother. Because of unclearly labeled drugs from the pharmaceutical giant Baxter Healthcare Corporation and careless medical care at the Cedars Sinai Clinic (LA), the boy and girl were poisoned with a 1000-fold overdose of heparin . They survived the accident after receiving intensive medical care. This incident made Quaid a strong advocate of safety and quality control in healthcare.
