I never promised you a rose garden is an American film from 1977 by director Anthony Page . The film is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Joanne Greenberg . It shows a young woman suffering from schizophrenia and the arduous struggle with the disease. A doctor gently helps her to improve her condition.

action

Sixteen-year-old Deborah is admitted to a mental hospital after attempting suicide , where she is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Deborah has created her own illusory world "Yr", in which she finds refuge from cancer. In addition, she speaks her own mystical language, incomprehensible to others . For Deborah, mental illness is an escape from an unbearable reality.

In the clinic, the doctor Dr. Fried her. She helps her to deal with the causes of the disease and to get by more and more without the illusory world "Yr". However, there are always setbacks and Deborah is close to giving up.

The aim of therapy is to accept the real world even if it is not a “rose garden”.

Film production

After the success of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , Roger Corman was able to get funding for a film version of the novel, published in 1964.

In a 2006 interview, writer Joanne Greenberg recalls that she was never asked for advice by the film's production team, only actress Bibi Andersson contacted her. Andersson told Greenberg that the producers didn't want to consult the author because she was "hopelessly insane."

A recording of a Balinese kecak was used for the background music of the Yr scenes .

The film was one of New World Pictures' most expensive productions .

Differences from the book

References to Deborah's Jewish faith, including the bullying on the part of her anti-Semitic classmates, were not taken from the book, so in the film version the fight against urethral cancer is the only reason for Deborah's withdrawal from reality.

At the 1978 Academy Awards , the film received a nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category .
