Joanne Greenberg

Joanne Greenberg (born September 24, 1932 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American writer. She published under the pen name Hannah Green .

Life

From the end of September 1948, Greenberg was treated for four years for schizophrenia by Frieda Fromm-Reichmann in the Chestnut Lodge psychiatric clinic in rural Maryland . From 1952 she attended college at the American University in Washington. She studied anthropology and English literature and earned a bachelor's degree . She also studied at the universities in London and Colorado . Joanne Greenberg has been married to the psychotherapist Albert Greenberg since 1955. The marriage has two sons.

Her first novel, The King's Persons (1963) is about the pogrom against the Jewish population in York on March 16, 1190. As a writer, Greenberg is primarily through their 1964 published novel I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (dt. I you never got a Rose garden promised ). The report about the healing of schizophrenia of a young person from a Jewish family by the therapist Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, who pioneered schizophrenia treatment , has strong autobiographical traits. In 1977 the novel was filmed under the title of the same name . In 2004 a play of the same name was also released .

The novel In this Sign (1970) arose from her professional activity in a therapeutic program for clients who suffer from deafness and who are learning sign language . It is about the deaf couple Abel and Janice around 1920. The plot begins with the purchase of a Pierce-Arrow car by the financially weak protagonist Abel.
