Susan Tyrrell
Susan Tyrrell (born March 18, 1945 in San Francisco , California - † June 17, 2012 in Austin , Texas ) was an American actress .
Life
She made her theater debut in New York in 1964 in the play In the Summer House and was part of the ensemble of the Art Carneys summer stage , which toured with the play Time Out for Ginger .
She has appeared in films since the early 1970s. Her portrayal of Grandma in Fat City earned her a 1972 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1978 she received a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bad . She often played run-down women who became disillusioned with life and especially with men and who work, for example, as bartenders or prostitutes.
In April 2000, she contracted essential thrombocythemia , which resulted in both legs being amputated below the knees. Nevertheless, she continued her career as an actress.
