Islands in the Stream (original title: Islands in the Steam ) is a feature film from 1977. In Germany it was released on October 28, 1977 in cinemas. Cinematographer Fred J. Koenekamp was nominated for an Oscar for best camera for the film . It is based on the book of the same name by Ernest Hemingway .

action

Thomas Hudson is an American who left the civilized world for a simple life in the Caribbean. Schaffner tells the story in four parts.

1: The part takes place in the Bahamas around 1940. Tom worries about his friend Eddy, who drinks and argues with everyone. Tom and the islanders celebrate Queen Mum's anniversary .

2: Weeks later, Tom meets his three sons again. The reunion after four years is bitterly sweet. They go on a fishing trip together to catch a marlin . The sons then return to the United States so that the eldest can take part in the Battle of Britain .

3: Here Audrey returns to Tom and wants to make up with him. In the end, Tom learns that his eldest son has fallen.

4: In the fourth part, Tom wants to help the victims of the Nazis escape. Joseph and Eddy accompany him. He wants to bring refugees to the USA via Cuba. When he faces the Cuban coast guard, he is able to save his crew, but is shot himself.

criticism

The lexicon of international films ruled that the film was "an overall [...] somewhat sterile film adaptation", although "succeeded in details".
