Richard the Lionheart and the Children of God (Original title: Lionheart ) is an American - Hungarian adventure film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from 1987 .

action

The young knight Robert Nerra comes to Paris in 13th century France after the death of his brother. There he begins to look after two orphans who want to join Richard the Lionheart's crusades with him . But the children are threatened by the black prince who enslaved numerous orphans. On the way on their journey, more and more children join Nerra, who are also on the run from the black prince.

background

The script, written by Menno Meyjes and Richard Outten based on a story by Meyjes, deals with the historical events of the Children's Crusade of 1212.

Francis Ford Coppola actually planned to direct the project himself, but then left the director's chair to his colleague Franklin J. Schaffner and thus only took part in the production of the film. The production had a high budget and was filmed mostly on locations in Hungary and Portugal . Due to poor reviews and few viewers, the film was only shown briefly in international cinemas.

criticism

"Simply structured, but lavishly equipped adventure film, which is based on the events surrounding the children's crusade of 1212 without claiming to be historical."

"One of the last films by director Franklin J. Schaffner ( Papillon , Planet of the Apes ), who elaborately - if not exactly imaginative - processed a historically authenticated story from the Middle Ages."

"Uplifting epic for Christian youth."
