Franklin J. Schaffner
Franklin J. Schaffner (* 30th May 1920 in Tokyo as Franklin James Schaffner , † 2. July 1989 in Santa Monica ) was an American film director .
Schaffner began his directorial career on the flourishing American television in the early 1950s . His TV series and television games became models for numerous successors. In 1955, 1956 and 1962 he was awarded an Emmy for his television work. It was not until the 1960s that he also had success as a director for feature films. For the film Patton: Rebel in Uniform he received an Oscar for best director in 1971 . Further great successes followed in the 1970s. From 1987 until his death in 1989 he was President of the Directors Guild of America (DGA).
