Thomas David Schlamme (born May 22, 1950 in Houston , Texas ) is an American film and television director and television producer . He is best known for his collaboration with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin . He also established the so-called walk and talk . This camera technology is characterized by conversations while walking. Schlamme has been President of the Directors Guild of America since 2017 .

Life

Collaboration with Aaron Sorkin

For the first time Schlamme worked for the television series Sports Night with Aaron Sorkin . In 1999 they started producing The West Wing with John Wells . Schlamme directed 14 episodes before he retired in 2003.

Thomas Schlamme has been married to the American actress Christine Lahti since 1983 , with whom he has three children.

Walk and talk

The direction of Schlamme is often described with the now established term walk and talk . Here, a scene is filmed uncut in which characters talk while walking.

Awards

Between 1999 and 2001, Schlamme received a total of three Emmys for his camera work in Sports Night and The West Wing .
