Miss Firecracker is an American comedy film from the year 1989 . Directed by Thomas Schlamme , the screenplay was written by Beth Henley based on her own play The Miss Firecracker Contest from 1984.

action

Carnelle Scott lives in a small town in Mississippi and is frustrated. She enrolls in a local beauty pageant held annually on July 4th. Her cousin Elain Rutledge won the Miss Firecracker title a few years earlier and moved to Atlanta , where she married. Scott is hoping that after the win she can leave town.

Scott's friends and relatives believe they will be disappointed. Her bad image in the city due to numerous male acquaintances could cost her the title.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 28, 1989 that the story told, in which " young women cry bitter tears because their older sisters are more beautiful than they are, " was not new. Henley, however, transforms something of the " painful openness " into " happy stupidity " that has an encouraging effect. The actresses' play would show as much “ insight ” as if they had once dreamed of the title themselves. The portrayals of Tim Robbins and Alfre Woodard are " hidden treasures " of the film. The comedy reflects a lot of the local color of the location.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the comedy was " inimitably played in the main role ".

backgrounds

The film was shot in Yazoo City ( Yazoo County , Mississippi ). It grossed approximately $ 1.85 million in US cinemas .
